"There is, in fact, at the present moment an injustice in the law so far as it concerns the private life of a certain number of men."
On 4 September 1957, ITN's Reggie Bosanquet spoke to Sir John Wolfenden, Chair of the Departmental Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution, about the recommendations contained within the committee's report. Now known as the Wolfenden Report, the paper recommended the decriminalisation of homosexuality and served as a landmark of progress in the advancement of the civil rights of gay men. The report did not consider the legal status of lesbians, as lesbians were not featured anywhere in the UK criminal code.
While Wolfenden's recommendations were progressive for their times, both Wolfenden and Bosanquet use language that promotes some negative stereotypes that endure today, for example the idea that gay people are likely to be predators. This tension between the progressive idea and the sometimes harmful discourse from which it emerges speaks to the ongoing, steady nature of social progress. What language do we use today that we might think of very differently in decades to come?
