Just to be clear, Cleopatra most likely committed suicide by drinking a mix of toxic herbs, or potentially by applying a deadly mixture as an ointment, as suggested by Strabo. Suicide by snake would have been difficult, not guaranteed to work, taken a long time, and would not have also led to the deaths of her two servants. Also, it would be "Tokugawa _Iemasu,"_ with an _I._ If it's a Japanese name or word, it's never _L._ They don't use that sound.

On the topic of Masamune's lost katana and how swords were confiscated post WWII, made me think of my wife's family heirlooms. A set of Daisho (Katana & wakizashi) that were forged by a swordsmith known as Muramasa during the 16th Century. My wife's ancestors were able to hide the katana & wakizashi during the American occupation of Japan, and these heirlooms are now back proudly on display in the main family residence.

The paintings from the Gardner museum were probably stolen as specific orders for wealthy collectors who don't have any problem with receiving stolen goods, and likely won't turn up unless some billionaire's heir actually finds a shred of conscience and turns one in. That heist was obviously well planned and heavily researched, so the only reason anyone would have to leave the more valuable works is if the thieves didn't have a buyer already lined up. The thieves probably had the paintings in their possession for less than a day, possibly for as little as a few hours. They stole them, shipped them or handed them over, got paid, and vanished.

@FairbrookWingates

But once the new 'owner' dies, their heirs may unknowingly try to sell the art or discover they're stolen when looking into their provenance or for documentation of ownership. Any research on the art would show they're classified as missing so the heirs would have to keep them and keep them hidden, and expect *their* heirs to do the same in perpetuity. I'm betting they'll come to light within a century.

Simon, Iemasa was not the last owner in Japan. Honjo was in the collection of the 13 military swords of Emperor Meiji. The swords were housed in the Tokyo Imperial Museum at war's end and the Honjo was liquidated from the collection under orders of GHQ. Just the other day September 2024, "Tokyo National Museum" said to me, when Honjo Masamune comes back to Japan, it will be placed back into their Museum into a private collection. I assume this will be the collection of Emperor Meiji's Military Swords. Please contact me for documented refrences. How much is Honjo Masamune worth now that we know it is Imperial Treasure that was last owned by the Imperial Household?

Re: the stolen art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum ... anyone with half a brain can figure out why only very specific pieces were stolen, and others were left. Curators and police who deal with art know this: The ones stolen were on order. Pieces with this level of value are not stolen to be sold but coveted by very private collectors, and literally their piece was requested. Someone in charge put together a list of collectors and the pieces from this museum that they wanted, this museum being targeted because of a security with huge holes in its system. then the job is done and the specific pieces collected. The collectors obtained their piece, paid for it and locked it away. For these people its not about hanging it in the dining room, its about just secretly owning it. This kind of collection passes thru generations, the pieces just stay hidden.

My father got a significant (shared) pay out in 2017 for a group of paintings the Nazis took in 1939. My great grandfather was lucky enough to be in the higher class of Jews, that were given the opportunity to leave Europe before the MASS genocides. He was on decent terms with the SS. He was one of the many assistants of Einstein, and invented the first dimming light switch. His family homes (Karplus is the latest version of his surname) were raided prior to their emigration. We still have many amazing old silver collections that they managed to get out, but my father got a massive pay out for the paintings taken in the home, which are now in historical protection. It’s amazing how many beautiful pieces of art are improperly placed and stolen. It really makes you think… how many amazing things on earth have been destroyed out of jealousy, greed, and hatred.

I’m curious how many artifacts over the years were hidden by thieves only for them to die shortly after taking the location with them.
