The original Robocop was actually one of the first films I've ever seen (at the ripe age of 4 fucking year old) and surprisingly communicated a lot to my toddler mind. Weirdly enough, I wasn't freaked out by the rated R material (that happened when I watched Terminator 2 at the same age. My dad gave no fucks), and I actually learned very young about the nature of corrupt corporations. I don't think the new Robocop could have the same effect on the young kids of this generation.

I don’t think the remake is total garbage whatsoever. It’s by no means a great film, but it is certainly competent and a decent watch. Obviously the original is far superior but it’s extremely rare for a remake to transcend the original material. The emotional focus and satirical narrative is what made the original so memorable. The remake is flashy with slicker visuals and cooler action but lacks the depth that made the original so iconic.

One thing you miss about the differences between the tech in the two movies is, in the original, Robocop seems to be the only thing OCP makes that works right, ED-209 is a piece of crap, and there are several references to other "wonder tech" breaking down or not working right, such as the orbital missile defense station as covered by the media breaks. This is because at the time that movie was made, we had just had the challenger disaster, japan and europe were kicking our ass in making good cars, and the pentagon was in the grips of a series of scandals where major weapon systems under development never worked right despite years of work and billions of dollars wasted on them, so Veerhoven included this "we can't build things that work anymore" aspect into the movie. Of course, by 2014 it is true, the big problem seems to be with our laws catching up to our technology, not our technology failing to deliver, so it makes sense that in the remake, ED-209 and EM-208 and the air drones are all bad ass and work just fine. lacking only the "human judgement / compassion" element.

I agree with your analysis. When I first saw Robocop 2014 (I need to watch it again anyway) I remember that the movie actually had some great ideas... that were gone to total waste. The technology that made robocop a 'sci-fi' movie in 1987 is slowly becoming real. in the past 18 years we have had arms that are controlled by someone's mind, and we restored someone's eyesight (to a limited extent) with a robotic eye. Robotics in general have advanced leaps and bounds. The ED-209 was obviously a dumb robot that even a child can outthink, but was very dangerous. Now there is an actual debate as to whether or not to let 100% autonomous drones make the decision to kill people on their own... so the world of robocop, a place where robots are considered good enough to be gun-carrying police is actually slowly but surely becoming reality. The movie had ONE good thing going for it... showing the human side of Alex Murphy more and exploring just what it means to be a human who is 99% machine. The movie wasted all of it. The brutality and lack of humanity of the original was completely gone as well. Detroit is a rundown place in 2014, for sure, but it was nowhere near as superbly violent or destroyed as the original was. The corporate bastards in the 1987 version were despicable people, even Bob Norton, Robocop's creator was a giant dick-waving gorilla, and my GOD was Dick Jones a bastard. The remake's corporate heads give the impression that they are just people doing their jobs. The main villain is a bigger ass than usual, but he doesn't come off nearly as vile as Dick Jones, he comes off as a cold hearted corporate parasite that is sadly a little too common in the real world. With a few script rewrites, the movie could have been as good as the original, but instead is just a wasted opportunity.

Good video, but the original 87 Robocop originally got an X rating by the MPAA having to be edited down a good bit to even get the R rating it got, but Netflix for a while had the uncut original cut of the movie for streaming, and the death scene of Murphy is even more graphic. I personally thought the 2014 version was just meh! because it was toned down so much, but the 87 version to me is a pure classic because it was allowed to be more edgy. Robocop 2 was still good, but Robocop 3 is where it started to go off the rails for me, and get meh!! along the cartoon, live action TV show, made for SciFi TV movies, and like i said the 2014 remake. Again I'm not saying all the others are bad just not as memorable as the original Robocop.

I actually completely forgot about the X rating. I think the VHS copy I had as a kid may very well have been cut down removing a lot of the Murphy murder scene. I totally agree with you about the later Robocop Sequels, they had fun ideas but never captured the same spark the 87 film had.

My problem with the NEW ONE was they COMPLETELY removed what made the original flourish and that was the BRUTAL MURDER of Alex Murphy. Taking away that scenario, is like taking out the murder of Bruce Waynes parents in any Batman film, or literature

He was right, ALSO the original RoboCop ironically had to be trimmed down because it was too graphic and it got an X rating....so the film was actually supposed to be even more graphic then what was shown. Slight necroposting here, but I thought I'd drop my 10 cents. To be clear, I'm with you - I like both films, but I differ slightly in my opinion. I do slightly prefer the 2014 version. I rather liked 2014 OCP, simply because it starts out as an actual, honest attempt to make the world a better place, and in the name of it they slip, ignoring the moral consequences of their intermediate choices because the ultimate end goal is such a good one (in their opinion). You actually get to watch them go down the road to Hell, paved as it is with good intentions. OCP in the original is much more of the classic 80's megacorp, and ends up coming off as bland because it really only exists to be evil and do evil things. On the other hand, the machine/person dynamic that they tried to set up in 2014 made no sense, and really broke immersion for me. In the original, the mechanistic behavior makes sense because portions of his brain are missing. Replaced, certainly, but new reflexes and emotions have to develop in those reconstructed parts of the brain, so he comes off as "machine-like" (and much of the movie is him looking blankly at his prior life and constructing a new emotional template for how he should be reacting to it, similar to many other people with brain damage). The 2014 version was fueled on the power of whatever the hell they were smoking at the time.

I agree with you there 100%. The 2014 robocop came off as a robot because that actor was just really clunky in the role. There was a clear difference between the Murphy and robocop in the 1884 film because we got to see him act like a human before he became it. The 2014 guy just felt like a robot before and after.

I've never been into nuance, if I like a film, I like it, I don't care about the emotional depth or the deep themes expertly interwoven into the story. I want a fun action movie, and the modern robocop fulfilled that better for me. This review doesn't make much sense to me simply due to the fact that I don't care about the depth, nuance, and deep themes. You rambling on about how the old one is superior due to those things is like gourmet food vs regular food. I don't care how long you ramble on for how superior the gourmet version is superior and expertly crafted to open my mind and expose me to new, exotic tastes and ideas... They still taste the same to me, and the gourmet probably tastes worse just because they fill it with more random crap I don't like instead of things I actually find delicious.

Melon Collie you actually point out one of the big things that make the 1987 version so much better than the remake. The remake isn’t bad, it’s just sort of a generic action movie, which isn’t something anyone would say about the 1987 version. Yes, not every movie needs to be deep or meaningful, there’s nothing wrong with some movies just being a simple popcorn action film, but the vast majority of meaningless action films won’t be remembered, and in fact the 1987 version of RoboCop didn’t exist, and the remake was still filmed, it’s highly unlikely that anyone would ever remember it existed 6-12 months after it was released.

The one reason I like the 2014 RoboCop over the 1987 version was that the 2014 version of Robocop show how OCP put the man inside the machine, then rewired his brain so the machine and man can function in conjunction with each other with less lag time , then started dampening his neurochemistry so Robocop could function more as a machine and less as a human. i actually like the remake quite a lot, maybe not for the robocop story itself, but for the secondary plot line of the show that basically shows how the news covers the events shown in the movie. it is such a great way of reflecting of how modern media is talking about events, twisting them, and trying to influence the watcher to agree with it. from my point of view, the show within the movie is the actual plot criticising the modern media, and the the rest of the movie is showing the events behind it all. it is more lighthearted than the original but i don't mind viewing it from this perspective. (edit: on a second note, its also a nice movie for reflecting on the Americans policy on allowing robots outside the country but not inside, reflecting on the usage of drones in current days)

In the eighties, you had movies for adults that then became popular with kids, sparking toy lines and games and lunch boxes and whatnot. These days, studios START OUT eying that sweet sweet merchandising money and they want a piece of that action. So they keep the movies PG-13 ... because kids. The movie ... often becomes something of an afterthought ... a fixed set of motions you need to go through before bathing in merchandising dollars. Well, Conan was an exception ... I like the 2014 version better. Love that OCP has its own PMC!

They're different enough that it didn't bother me as much as red dawn did. The old Robocop has a element of Satire that the Remake will never reach. The Remake tried to make it more current with present issues and I liked that they tried at least.

HistoricNerd I felt the original actually didn't try hard enough. I think the remake brought more realism to the concept of robotics. In the original it felt like Robocop couldn't even run. In the remake we get a sense of what real robotics can do IRL with out going over board like in G.I. Joetastrophe.

original movies all the way. remakes are just for money and good looks. but the story line? pffft i hate most remaked movies. the robocop 2014 cgi sure looks nicer than the old robocop but it is incomparable with the old one. idk what else to say! its just those who remake movies arent that creative at all. all they do is modify the originals to make it thier own and it sucks! lol.. btw, the original robocop suit looks more realistic than the robocop 2014. old robocop = looks like steel. 2014 robocop= looks like rubber.

I drew the same conclusion here. I felt that the re-make lacked the dark, edgy and gritty feel of the original. If they had kept the ultra violence from the original we could have been talking about a modern classic instead of a forgettable one.

Wow. My main takeaway is that you really don't understand the original or it's context at all. How old are you?

Ideas in remake were interesting. The story and the narrative was just unfocused, kinda directionless, making it Meeeh. It reflects the times it was made in perfectly. Corporate, soulless, lacking personality and focus, bland, forgettable throwaway gizmo product trying to cash in on '80s nostalgia.

Каким же убогим и визуально бедным выглядит фильм 2014-го года по сравнению с творением Верховена и Ко от 1987!

The only flaw with the 2014 Robocop movie is Murphy wife. No Western woman would have stay loyal after the husband death after 2 week she would have move on to the next sucker!

You guys are smoking dope have you never, heard of scientific advancements in design, look at humanoid robots in development now, how sleek and actually how the move, plus 2014 Alex Murphy didn't suffer from brain damage, I grew up RoboCop and 2014 version I can watch, the Original Movies, series were eye sores, we know that, get with the times. You wanna hate some shit hate the MCU

2014 version is garbage! Comparing the two, is actually a great way to demonstrate how far cinema has fallen. Modern cinema is all about placing more emphasis of CGI in stead of story, dialogue, directing, emotional depth and anything else you can think of. Instead of it being used to add to the movie it now seems that CGI is simply used to replace everything/anything else that is used to make a great film.
