The Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783) is not a stand-alone event but one that had implications for world events not only at the time but in the future. This dramatic story is of the longest siege ever endured by British servicemen. Additionally, the siege played a pivotal part in the outcome of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).
Starvation, bombardments, infantry attacks, sea battles, smuggling and international peace negotiations all form part of this intriguing story. The most famous element is the French and Spanish attack upon Gibraltar using purpose-built floating gun batteries which the British repulsed with furnace-heated shot which they called, "hot potatoes".
