I've said this on other sites but this is deeply personal for me because my father was the Project Engineer during its construction and I used to go with him to watch its construction. If he was alive today he would be heartbroken and devastated.

What a beautiful picture of that bridge before careless captain and crew and we're not keeping the maintenance on that boat good correct up to par and where was the tugboat. Insurance company and the company that owns the ship should foot the bill for everything.

This span was built in 1972 and completed in 1977 for 115 million dollars estimate. To rebuild it in todays monetary terms will certainly be in the few billions!

Special reroute scheduled for interim will need to be phased in. Tunnels oft don’t allow hazardous materials transport. Those pillars of the main span seem vulnerable in shipping lanes. Some massive protective barriers would be worth the extra cost.

My history with this bridge is always bouncy in the center while i drove tractor trailers across with heavy loads always feeling secure on it.

Look how far the bumpers (the dolphins) are from the bridge. Why?

It was built in the 70s genius. Ships weren't as large back then as they've become now.

Crappy bridge. No pier protection, bridge deck rode like crap and was full of patches, no emergency shoulders.

No tug boat accompanied this ship through such a vulnerable slot. Who ever made that policy should be prosecuted and imprisoned.

@@keyjam9 the tug guided the ship out of the dock. It did its job. Tugs aren't meant to babysit every ship that comes and goes out of the harbor. I don't think ppl realize how expensive requesting a tug is, smh.

Again ,I question the incident, why would they allow the ship to approach the bridge alone in the fist place without TUG BOAT ASSISTANCE ! When a ship losses power it loses all power and its dead in the water . Those TUGS could have easily guided the ship into the harbour. It was an accident looking to happen .

FOR THE 500TH TIME, TUGS AREN'T MEANT TO BABYSIT EVERY SHIP THAT COMES AND GOES!! THEY'RE ONLY THERE TO TOW SHIPS IN AND OUT OF THE DOCK. PERIOD!!
