PS Wonderful to listen to someone who was there. This is real history. Loved it.

Year 1903: A Norwegian, Ægidius Elling, was able to build the first gas turbine that was able to produce more power than needed to run its own components, which was considered an achievement in a time when knowledge about aerodynamics was limited. Using rotary compressors and turbines it produced 11 hp (massive for those days). His work was later used by Sir Frank Whittle.

Griffiths as far as I know would have driven a propeller with his turbine engine. He was approached by Whittle whose idea in 1929 was a pure jet using the thrust to propel the aircraft. Whittle was the first to suggest this. He was told by Griffiths it was impracticable and wouldn't work. Whittle had also made errors with his arithmetic which made things worse with Griffith, yet the math when he did it right suggested the idea was much better than even he first thought. Whittle knew about axial compressors but the war made getting a working reliable engine ready as quickly as possible so he chose to use the centrifugal type which was already being made for aircraft turbo superchargers. Griffiths engine became the axial turbojet Beryl? (from memory, may be wrong..) Edit: Yes, wrong. The Metropolitan Vickers F-2 'Beryl' was the fifth version of the engine..And a good one too.
