Ah dang. If only I would have known you made this. I just made a video comparing Hong Kong with Macau, and this would have been a great collaboration opportunity. Great job with this. I love how you have the timeline at the bottom throughout, and your use of maps is clear and understandable.

The final comment about Hong Kong's future is certainly on point even toady, one and half years after this is published.

Unless something drastic happens it will always be spot on. China is unpredictable and Hong Kong has had a capitalistic democracy one way or another for so long that switching to communism in the future won't be an option for the people. The problematic times are only to come as we near the 40 year period end.

During the Ming dynasty, the Portuguese actually occupied part of Hong Kong (Lantau Island and Tuen Mun) for a few years. Though it didn't last long but it is still worth to be mentioned as that's actually the first time Hong Kong had an official connection with the West.

some wrong/unclear (kinda) info in this vid: 2:56 more specifically, that's because the north was divided and ruled by numerous nomadic people and the south is more stable 3:53 it's more like some villages sprawling across the northeastern part of nowadays New Territories and those families were immigrated from nowadays Guangdong and Fujian provinces 6:20 before that, the British had already kinda 'occupied' the island 6:30 u forget to mention that the British declared hk as a free port 7:41 that's just a pic of a school in hk

Dear, dear my keyboard is of 'latin' characters for dialects of Guangdong manually... UK have their own channels islands south from perspectives from London (starting from 55 latitude north hemisphere), while Hong Kong is located 20 latitude north hemisphere. UK has their own knowledge of fisheries...kind regards, be healthy, be happy, be faithful, take care... One of the Chinese ambassadors to the world and namely to the UK explains the handover signed during the 80's between UK and HK... Safety reasons for obvious reasons of integrating information round the world. Be careful...

The way how Britain gained control of Hongkong might be less than graceful but throughout the 156 years of indirect rule no one in this city has ever been coerced to show his patriotism towards Britain, sing God Save the Queen, speak English, or pay heavy tax. In the opposite, it is the British administration that implanted rule of law, civil liberty and a prosperous economy in this today pearl of the orient.

Its still colonisation. I’m actually amazed that China didn’t take it forcefully and respected the 99 year lease. If China occupied an island in Europe, Europeans would initiate a crusade against it.

The UK never should have given Hong Kong to the CCP. They should have given it to Taiwan after the lease was up, and signed a permanent defense treaty.

I knew zero information about Hong Kong prior to viewing this video. It sounds like in 2040, at a time in history when communist China must reckon with sanctions on manufacturing due to climate change, Hong Kong will be fully annexed and desist its free market structure. A lot to look forward to!!
