I've been a semi-pro guitarist for decades and the Seymour Duncan JB pickup is the best hard rock pickup ever made. It has the best combo of harmonics, midrange, bass and treble yet not too much output so it lets your amplifier's gain shine. I've tried a lot of different pickups too. Kurt had a good ear for harmony

I love the JB humbucker. I think it sounds best in mahogany and maple bodies. It has a tame sound to it compared to my other favorite the SD TB6 Distortion. The TB6 is in your face and a great metal pickup. I play a ton of covers. I can go from KISS to Korn and beyond. For instance, when covering Alice in Chains I prefer the JB as it captures the grungy guitar sound from the 90s very well. Like a hot PAF. If I'm covering Dokken, Ratt, etc I gotta use my TB6s. Recently I got a Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder guitar with the EMG Retroactive hybrid Hot 70s humbuckers and have been blown away. They get that EVH tone a little better than the Wolfgang humbucker imho. ZZ Top and other blues tones are amazing. I've been resistant of the Active pickup craze until I got my Schecter. It's hard to put down. Kurt's tone wasn't as erratic or random as people think. I've heard people say that any Strat with any pickup would do when playing Nirvana songs. I was so intrigued by Nirvana when they hit it bog that I bought Nevermind on CD, cassette and vinyl. With vinyl I put on the headphones and really listened to what Kurt had going on. Between t stock Fender singlecoils and the Dimarzio super Distortion humbuckers he recorded with the JB best captured those tones playing live on tour as well as the hot rails. Kurt had a sort of magic about his touring rig. Simple, direct and to the point. I sure miss him.

I remember seeing some rare sound check footage for the "LIVE AND LOUD" show. Kurt was so debilitated by H it was one of the very rare times you would actually ever see him so effected by his dark habit. Yet, he went on to play a great show and did a 2 hr long interview with MTV after the performance. It must have been a roller coaster time for everyone involved.

After a life long love of this bands sound I finally broke down and bout a new Fender offset series player mustang in sonic blue, it very closely matches the blue of sky stang one. Never thought I'd own a mustang let alone one in such a close color to Kurt's. Now if I can get my hands on a Gibson RD artist bass in Ebony my life would be complete.

Great video. You’re 100% correct about the supply of KC mustangs being low(especially left handed). I was lucky enough to find the iconic lefty sonic blue with red tortoise shell pick guard after searching for months. The lefty models do not have the “mustang” insignia on the headstock, just like Kurt’s. Was there ever an answer given on why the competition mustang color was different and without a matching headstock? Keep up the great content!
@loungeact6311

Thanks for adding this. I did see a lefty pic without "mustang" and I assumed someone sanded it off. Lol....Not sure as to why the differences. I mean I think the cost to paint the headstock would be minimal.
@JMohler
2 жыл бұрын
The color difference on the lake placid blue is simple. Kurts was a vintage model. Lake placid blue notoriously fades out and gets a greenish shade to it. What fender released was an accurate depiction of what the color has always looked like on a new guitar. As far as the no matching headstock I think that was just a detail that became a casualty by the final product. Fender prolly already had finished necks for the mustang and just didn't wanna mess with it. Gotta keep in mind at the time these weren't USA made custom shop pieces. Imo every non sunburst fender offset body guitar eg mustang, jag, jazzmaster should have a mandatory matching colored headstock. Just my 2¢
@Tremonster261
2 жыл бұрын
Cool video! Yeah I never understood why people got so butt hurt over the lake placid blue version not looking like Kurt’s. The Cobain signature Mustangs were never intended as replicas of any one particular instrument, in the way that the relic Jaguar was. They were intended to be inspired by Kurt’s ‘In Utero era’ Mustangs. The lake placid blue was just another colour option. I did think it was cool that they left the ‘Mustang’ decal off the left handed versions though. Talking Kurt’s SMTS lake placid blue Mustang, I’m surprised Fender haven’t done an actual replica of that, maybe relic it and try to colour match the more greenish blue of a faded lake placid blue guitar. It’s pretty much the only Kurt guitar they haven’t done yet. Surprised they didn’t do that for the recent Nevermind anniversary, rather than reissuing the Jag-Stang.

Skystang 3 was his home guitar of the ones Scott Zimmerman made for Kurt. It was definitely played. I asked Lanegan about that guitar. knew musicians in town and am a guitar player. Good observation on the slider switches. I'd assume he played it pretty gently vs onstage. I got to see them with 3 different drummers (Chad, Dale on a very short tour while opening for Sonic Youth and Dave). Every incarnation of the band was slightly different. Dave was the pro and hardest hitting. Chad had a lot of creative swing. Dale was, in my opinion, the absolute best drummer they had in studio and live. he was amazing. I saw Dale on a tour with Redd Kross a few years ago. I actually wore the circles sub pop shirt i bought that night. What kinda shocked me was that when Dale played guitar I was brought back to garage jams of my teens. Sonically, my brain went to the bleach era. It was his own of course and not an imitation of KC but the vibe was there. The Grays Harbour vibe came out. Sorry for being lengthy. When Dale played that show with them it was "hometown ethereal" or something. If you can relate, you could feel it was 3 guys who lived similar lives and who grew musically together in the development years. If someone at that particular show had said " these guys used to basement jam together " you'd easily think " oh yeah, for sure they did. so obvious". find a show on youtube with dale playing drums. i think there are a couple. after a listen or two, you might hear a different cohesion of the band. more natural maybe.

Later I bought a 69' Sonic Blue Mustang 90's Japanese re-issue. Anyway, I've never seen anyone mention the guitar that Danny Ferrington made for Kurt. I only know of it because I live in Monroe, Louisiana where Danny is from. He showed us some voicemails Kurt had left him about the guitar and such. The fretboard had heart inlays. And Danny believes this was used making In Utero. Although no one I know or anything I've found on the web has a picture of this guitar. But Danny Ferrington is known for his work. Let me know what you can find out. Great video with some good info. It’s hard to get the single coil hotrail that looks like the 90s version, the new one has a plastic one piece cover instead of the taped bobbin. They sell a custom one but it’s nearly double the price with a 2 month wait. I’m sure they both sound the same and are better than the wrong one in the signature model. They really didn’t make the mustangs right like they did the signature jaguar.

I can't believe they are wanting $1200 for a Mexican made Jag-Stang. I had one of the 2000s MIJ versions. I LOVE Nirvana, but as a practical instrument, it didn't impress me. @@loungeact6311 it's amazing what they charge for these, yet a year ago I can get a loaded down fender owned Jackson sl2q soloist for a thousand, or a fairly high end dk2, that does Nirvana music better than the current fender lineup. @@adamdarmstaedter1256 personally I think they sound terrible..... I'm not familiar with every part, I just know they don't hold a candle to the original better prices signature mustangs, that were 700 before the prices went crazy, or even the signature Jaguar, that due to lower quality super distortion pickups vs the old ones, you can hear moderate tone loss compared to his. If I do anything fender is going to involve running from these models. I'd rather spend the money on a high end Jaguar that's far nicer.
