In the games, the first proto-Poké Ball was made in the times of Mystery Dungeon, predating even humans, though it wasn't actually used for catching, or recruiting as it was known back then, but was instead used as the first Pokédex, meaning that the first actual Poké Ball, in the sense that it was actually used for catching, wasn't created until 1925, when Professor Westwood invented the Poké Ball in Celadon University in Kanto.
@Rocheburger

I dunno if I like this. I’m a casual fan so not a lot of Pokémon media consumed other than a few of the games… but it’s always been my assumption that they were high-tech objects. Like, the Pokémon world has got holograms and floating objects and stuff, so I just assumed pokéballs were like a natural evolution of cutting-edge tech- and only invented shortly before the games. In other words, red and blue were only the first or second generation of kids made to actually capture them in balls. Otherwise, why make the Pokémon games take place in the quasi-future in the first place?

I like the idea that even though Silph Co. figured out how to make a Master Ball ages ago, they failed to mass-produce them not because they were too expensive to make but to maintain a monopoly in the ball market. Also, the fact that Ghost Pokemon are literal undead spirits and Pokeballs are capable of catching and imprisoning them has even *MORE* disturbing implications about the world. On top of the whole, "The society is built on legalized dog fighting" thing.

It seems like these are all based on the Anime. With our knowledge that the Ancient Pokéballs from Hisui were considered the first versions of Pokeballs in the games, I feel like the tumblestone pokeballs would come before the section that says 300 years ago in the short. It isn't likely to be the first Pokeball exactly, but it is one that seems to be a more wider variety and able to be made that likely replicated the older history's appearances and work successfully. Also on the topic of Hisui, it seems that Team Galactic didn't invent the Red Chain, but instead a replication from the one in Hisui, in fact, I dont recall the hisui "version" of Glactic, the Galaxy Exploration group (might not be the actual name, but close) didn't even have any involvement in the creation of it since I think (spoilers for PLA ahead) you got banished from Jubelife, for some reason, before you go plate hunting, find the Unovan Genies, and then finally prepare to craft the red chain and make the Origin ball. Hisui has a somewhat weird story, but it is a cool region
