www.sierraclub.org/airquality Some people want to take Southern California’s air quality backward -- but that’s because they don’t remember how far we’ve come and don’t realize how much further we have to go. Yvonne Watson, a lifelong Southern California resident, recounts the history of air pollution in the region and her struggle to breathe throughout her life in the most polluted air basin in the country. While the region has never met safe air standards under the Clean Air Act, air quality did improve when air regulators got tough on polluters. Air quality safeguards have been watered down in recent years, though, and climate change is driving prime smog conditions.
South Coast Air Quality Management District must develop a strong plan to bring clean air back to Southern California.

Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to address climate disruption by moving away from the dirty fossil fuels and toward a clean energy economy.
