Just a little side project I've been doing after FTPOT. Nothing in your line today, and if your curiosity's satisfied, you can go.
No no no, I'm kidding. This probably took a week or two to make, and I'm sure there are at least a few people here who are interested in this sort of thing.
This video is the first in a series of two about the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, the famous British theatre troupe that performed Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy operas for over 100 years, whose recordings are still sought after today.
Note that “guest appearance” here refers to those such appearances labelled “guest” in my main source - “Who Was Who in the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company (1875-1982)” - but only if they played one or two parts, I believe was the criteria.
Why the twentieth century when the video starts in 1904? That's when the number of touring companies became one - with a small exception in the 1920s - and it's also when the Company seems to have begun to list names of not only the principals, but the choristers as well. Also, if you check out the WWW you'll see that the time period before 1904 was a bit of chaos about who was who and where. But I've a feeling most of you will find the 20th century more interesting.
And why the silence between 1939 and 1945? The war, of course, but also because there were no recordings made by the Company during this period.
