History:
The Kawasaki KX80 is a motorcycle designed for
entry-level motocross competition.
It was produced by Kawasaki from 1979 until 2000
and was replaced by the KX85 in 2001.
The first Big Wheel model was released in 1987
with 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels.
This particular motorcycle was one of the longest
running models of the Kawasaki line and was
released over two decades with several variants
and models.
The First KX80
The first KX80 released in 1979 was a motocross bike. Motocross bikes
come standard with a superior suspension system and powerful engines,
enabling these bikes to easily travel through rough terrain. The first KX80
had a lime-green and black color, which it maintained until it was replaced
by the KX85 in 2001. The 1979 model was equipped with an 80cc
liquid-cooled engine producing 15 HP at 11.000 rpm and came with a
17-inch tire in front and a 14-inch tire at the back.
Development
The KX80´s design and configuration remained almost the same
during its first years, mostly with engine improvement and several
upgrades on the suspension system. Its 1980 model was released
with a suspension stroke designed for longer travel, an upgraded
swing arm and an upgraded front fork for better handling.
During the 1980´s the KX80 became better equipped with
safety features, such as a front disc brake and a rear drum brake.
The Last KX80
The last KX80 was released in 2000 and still came with its signature
lime-green color, but with more colorful decals and designs.
The last KX80 was equipped with an 82cc two-stroke liquid-cooled
engine combined with a digital CDI ignition system. Its drivetrain was
a 6-speed chain transmission and was equipped with hydraulic disc
brakes on both wheels. Its front suspension system was a 36mm
inverted telescopic fork, while its rear suspension was equipped with
a Uni-Trak single shock.
Modern Variant
The latest successor of the Kx80 is the 2014 KX85-II. Now marketed
as a motocross bike for younger riders, it comes standard with a
liquid-cooled 84cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine and a 6-speed
chain transmission system. It still carries almost the same suspension
system, but stronger and with more setting options. It now comes
standard with 19-inch tires in front and 16-inch tires at the back and
disc brakes on both wheels. The KX85 now also comes with a black
and lime-green body and ebony decals and accessories.
