The Pamunkey Indian Tribe is one of 11 Virginia Indian tribal governments recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was the state's first federally recognized tribe, earning status in January 2016. On January 12, 2018, the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act of 2017 recognized six additional Virginia tribal governments: Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Upper Mattaponi, Rappahannock, Monacan, and Nansemond.
