I was really hoping you'd have included the Royal Yacht Britannia. However, when I did a quick search to refresh my memory when it was retired, I saw that it was the last of a long line of yachts for the British royals. Now I'm hoping for a feature on the history of these yachts.

We toured it when I visited the UK from NZ in June, it was bigger than I thought but smaller than other people thought. There was a slide out car holder on the port deck for the Land Rover and the Rolls. the interior was quite lavish but not too much over the top. Funnily enough the wheel house looked like it belonged to a ww11 destroyer! not flash at all. I was amazed to learn that it took several hundred people to run the ship. Because it cruised the world and had to cater for all the foreign dignitaries dining on it etc. The engine room looked like you could eat off it it was so pristine, and was told it was like that even in those days. I have never seen so many gauges, it took 20 engineers just to keep an eye on them!

Having worked on yachts before and in the day before internet and flat-screen TV's even, I can't imagine the sheer amount of hustle the crew and stewards and would have to do to keep these people entertained and well fed. Great presentation Mike! And I really enjoyed seeing Delphine again, the last time was on Speedvison TV's "Boat Night" close to 25 years ago. Delphine struck me as looking like a Spanish-American War battleship with the guns removed and / or a veteran of Teddy Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet." Turn of the 20th Century American multi-multi millionaire J.P. Morgan once said about yachts "If you have to ask what it costs, you can't afford it!" His famous yacht Corsair was the sight of a contentious business meeting between two rival American railroads, the New York Central and a Pennsylvania Railroad surrogate called the New York, West Shore & Buffalo. The bitter rivalry and rate war between the two was giving Wall Street a serious case of the jitters so J.P. was called in to mediate. According to American railroad legend J.P. held both parties "prisoner" on Corsair until a deal was worked out! The deal? The NYC leased the NY, WS & B from the PRR for 999 years! Or something like that. Thanks for posting!

Many nice, classic yachts still exist. Sure, modern yachts like Paul Allen's or many in Dubai make the news, but there are still some great pre-war yachts around. In 1980, I was an 11 year old sailing my sabot in La Paz, Mexico. In the anchorage was a 110' sleek yacht built just before World War I. Of course she had long ago been converted to diesel, but there was no mistaking the classically beautiful lines with all superstructure lined in mahogany. Sure, that was 44 years ago, but many marinas around the world have one or two of these classic yachts. There was one in Manila around 2010.

Interesting, Mike... some additional information. The Kaiser was jealous of his cousin's Standart (pronounced Shtandart in Russian) and wanted a larger yacht than Hohenzollern (1893). In 1913 construction began on Ersatz Hohenzollern but WWI stopped its construction. Hohenzollern (1893) made only one trip to the US. In 1902 it carried the Kaiser's brother, Prince Henry, to the US to christen the Kaiser's new racing schooner, Meteor III that was built in America and designed by Cary Smith. Emily Roebling Cadwalader was a member of the famous Roebling family who built the Brooklyn Bridge. She also owned the 85 foot Sequoia that became the US presidential yacht, used by every president from Herbert Hoover to Gerald Ford. It was sold by Jimmy Carter and, as of 2019, was being refurbished in Belfast. You need to get a copy of Erik Hofman's book - The Steam Yachts: An Era of Elegance. I checked and a used copy on Amazon sells for less the $20 US. I really enjoy your videos, especially those on the Titanic.
