This is what makes the OSP videos worth watching, I feel. Not just Blue but Red also. When they put together a video about something they want to talk about, they put the effort into doing it in a way to tell us WHY they like that topic and WHAT about it we should look at. The topics might bounce around quite a bit, but they're always interesting because it's interesting *to them*. The enthusiasm comes through, and that can make a script or concept which seems boring actually... be fun.

Take a look at modern Washington DC, note that all the neo-classical buildings and monuments date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. None of the monuments or government building built since about thd 1940s have been in neo-classical style, but rather have almost exclusively been built in a style known, and no I am not making this up, "Brutalism". You know, the style of flat unadorned concrete, small windows, and plain box style buildings? That and what I think is termed neo-modern (lots of plain, flat, unadorned glass and steel) are heavily favored by architects and design committees, whereas the average person prefers, when surveyed, styles like neo-classical (especially for government buildings), neo-gothic, and art neuvo (I think is the name) styles (think Gotham City for neo-gothic and think Metropolis for art neuvo). All architectural styles that have been heavily out of favor among architects since the mid 20th century...

wich one and wich building? you know that the library of alexandria wasnt one building and that it was burned down several times. The Romans, the Jews, the christians and the muslims all burned down a version of the library of Alexandria. Al Murry the english stand up comedian has a joke about, how to spot a bougiour uneducated snop. its basicly just hearing who cant stop speaking about the library without knowing anything about the library. Ceasar famously burned down the library, but the movie "Agora", with Rachel Weisz, is set in the library in the 4th century. Hero of Alexandria the most famous professor at the library died in the year 70, around 100 years after Ceasar burned down the library.

@@motionpictures6629 Plus, the vast majority of the texts were actually copied out and stored in multiple different libraries across the middle east. So, we did not, in fact, lose very much of the literature that was stored there. WE lost some original scrolls and manuscripts, but we have copies of most of it in other places. It would be possible to recreate almost their entire catalog of knowledge in a new library of Alexandria building at any point. Side note - burning down the Library was pretty much a must for any burgeoning religion, a true sign that they'd 'made it' as a faith. XD

So as a college student currently going through History and Theory of Architecture and soon to be going through History and Theory of Renaissance and Baroque Architecture, thank you for this video. Most other students in the class are only in if due to the requirements for the degree plan, but I would've taken the course just for the fun of it. This has been one of my favorite OSP vids and I sincerely hope you do more over the architecture of the past. Its so often over looked on how much of an impact it has on history and the culture of the people around it that it makes me so happy to see other people appreciating it. Thank you.

OMG Blue, you don't wanna know how much I needed this! Art is fine and all, but I never understood architecture. I've been interested in doing research on myths, music etc. But I never understood how to get around architecture. Finally OSP gives me an hand to step into it. Thank-You-SOOOOOO-Much! But why then? you may ask. Well.... I'm a European, so this is life for me. I walk across buildings from all over history every day and never understood how to analyse them. Now I can a bit better. Again, thanks sooo much blue. :D

As a human being with eyes and the ability to perceive my surroundings, it's easy to just look at big fancy buildings and think "oh big fancy building kinda pretty I guess." Hearing these detailed historic breakdowns of architecture though reveals so much about them that would just be lost by otherwise observing them with absolutely no historic context. Understanding of how their shapes and patterns came to be so prevalent in the world and the development of those styles over time reveals a whole new angle to appreciate them by.

Never think "This thing will only appeal to me". You guys have over a million subscribers...theres gonna be more people interested in this stuff. Plus, honestly, hearing somebody else who is passionate about thing X, even if I myself am not inherently interested, can really bring me in as well. I care nothing of pro wrestling but when Super Eyepatch Wolf talks about wrestling I get sucked in and his passion rubs off on me as well. Then also keep in mind the people who just don't know what "neoclassicism" is...they can't care about it if they don't know about it. So by teaching people about it, you create 'converts' of sorts and create people who now care about it along side you! As usual, your video is awesome Blue. I'd be down to see more like it.

This examination of ancient architecture being rediscovered and reimplemented is interesting (and I guess applies more widely to the entire Renaissance) because it's an example of recreating the past to achieve progress. This just seems so unusual because these days, the mentality around progress is almost entirely about moving forward. At best this involves ignoring the past and at worst it can mean destroying the past. And I find this example of looking back to determine how to move forward a surprise to be sure but a welcome one! Because I think there are great ideas in the past that we have forgotten about as well as great new ideas we still need to discover. Real progress necessitates both the old and the new and it's entirely foolish to think we will achieve sucess if we only get our ideas from one at the expense of the other.

More please! Maybe I'm biased as an almost architect, but for something that literally surrounds us I think it's criminal how little we talk about architecture. These kinds of vulgarized, accessible videos are surprisingly rare but we definitely need more of them, since architecture theory has been made into a very insular field by people both inside and out. Personally I find medieval architecture particularly interesting, it was mostly cast aside and intentionally obscured when Palladio and his gang came up with their shiny new theories, but the amount of work and knowledge and incredible skill that went into it is staggering. Between the fall of Rome and the printing press cathedrals themselves become an important way of keeping codified knowledge, making their history very thicc with juicy esoteric mumbo jumbo but also many fascinating stories.
