This video made me buy this also but thought I'd post a couple problems I had installing it on my 2011 Outback to help others if they are buying it. I really like it so far but 2 problems I had: 1) my wheel matched only two of the bolt holes in the Hitchgate. The manual says you need three bolts; their customer service said that two should be secure enough but I wanted the extra security so had to get another drilled. 2) the wheel bolts that come with the Hitchgate they say are the standard 12x1.25, but the thread is different than those on my Outback so you can't use the same lug nuts for your Hitchgate and car. I wanted to put my Outback's locking lug nuts on my Hitchgate spare but instead I had to go to an automotive store and have them find ones with the proper thread that would fit.

Another option I just learned about is to take a "shaved" full sized tire and wheel and put that in the spare tire area of the vehicle. A pro shop does the shave--which is not dangerous--just takes off enough for it to fit in there, then you get the benefit of a full sized tire and spare. Do keep in mind, the tiny spare disables the all wheel drive system, which does figure into the expense calculation. IF you are way out there and lose a tire, you might feel a lot better swapping in a full sized tire for the drive to services. Of course, you also have the expense of buying a new, full sized tire and wheel, that alone is not cheap.

Hey Highjak thanks for sharing the Video. This Tire Carrier is a Nice Simple Idea that any Machine, Welding Shop can Fabricate for a Fraction of the Price. Buy the Material from a Local Metals Store. a length of Chanel Iron 2.5" x 1/4", a length of Rectangular Tubing 2.5" x 1" x 1/4", a Steel Bar 1.5" dia. x 3" with a 5/8" Hole through it, weld to the Rectangular Tubing for the Pivoting Arm. 2 Pieces 1/4" x 4" x 12" Flat Steel weld onto the Chanel Iron to house the Pivot Arm with 2 - 5/8" dia. Holes for the Pivot Bar & Hitch Pin. A 5/8" Hitch Pin from Tractor Supply and take it to a Local Welding shop to Fabricate it. It shouldn't cost you any more than 300.00 in total and will be a lot stronger. Of course you will have to figure out the lengths of Material need or take your Vehicle to the Shop & they will figure it out & might give you a price with the Material included. I will be making one for my GMC Savana Van as it's a pain in the ass to remove the Spare Tire from under the Chevy-GMC Vans & Trucks as they rust out. God-for-Bid you are on a Highway with a Flat; you most definitely will need a Tow to a Garage to remove the Spare Tire..

Very nice set up! Your car looks great! I just got an '18 SJ 25.i and I've been looking for solutions to carry a spare that don't involve throwing it in the cargo area/roof. Have you noticed a huge difference with all the added weight to the rear of your car? Performance/noise/sag? Liked & subbed. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with this beast.
@HighjakSecondary
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Justin! No added noise at all, but there is a small bit of sag with the added weight on the rear even with my King standard height springs. Gotta keep in mind with the hitch, spare, and Wilco hitgate it's all around 150+ lbs in total on the rear end. If going this route I would recommend a 3/8" to 1/2" higher rear spacer as compare to the front.

I don't think I'd trust using the migrated receiver for any sort of towing or recovery given the geometry and how it would impart that force onto the frame of the Forester. On a true body on frame truck, then yes, I'd say it's usable, but not on the lightweight unibody crossover "frames" like our Subarus use. I have no math to back up these claims; just knowing what these are made of and I wouldn't trust yanking my vehicle or another vehicle out using that offset point.

LOVE 'em!! The weight on these is going to be tough to beat. While they don't have the same load rating as the Method MR502, which is to be expected since the material and mfg process is the same and the Boxers just have less material, I'm not out rally racing these wheels and I believe they have more than high enough rating for the relatively little Subaru. Even so, I've already heard of guys using the Boxers in "rally" without issue. The only comment I hear from people is that they look like a bitch to clean... but I'm not taking this thing to car shows as a show car, I've never once got on my hands and knees to scrub these and I likely never will.
