Wish I'd watched this video before I attempted my first decoupling. What an evening that was. I had to calm myself, try to call for help...of course everyone had gone home who could help me. I watched another video snd paused to pray with my wife that God would help me figure it out. I went back and read the instructions on the ground control and remembered that the video said to backup to free the pressure on the hitch connection. Then I was finally able to unlatch the release mechanism, raise the hitch a bit and disconnect. Wish the service guy had spent a few more minutes with me to explain those steps. I thank you immensely for your information. The part about the brakes on the control in the car while moving forward and backwards was priceless. RF

Thank you so much for the kind words and we are glad you were able to get it figured out. That's exactly why we make these videos. We struggled to learn when we were starting out and hope sharing our knowledge can keep someone from making the same mistakes we did! We have certainly had moments where we had to step back and pray before proceeding! It happens to all of us. Our goal is to show you what it's like day after day living the RV life. Thanks for the video! Just purchased my first RV (Grand Design, Reflection 150 Series (260RD). The video was a BIG HELP for me to create a checklist. Also now I feel more confident that I can couple and decouple the fifth wheel. So far I've only done with the dealerships assistance.

Hi Robert do you use the turning point hitch feature in your 260rd? That’s supposed to eliminate the need for a slider hitch which saves weight. What kind of 5th wheel hitch do you have? Thanks!

I have the same hitch. To avoid the problem of unlocking the hitch, I chock the trailer tires, and then reverse the truck about one inch. This takes the pressure off the hitch jaws, and it releases easily, everytime.

Nice clear video that also showed a couple things I don't have or need yet... we don't have auto-leveling and we have a long-bed truck. But I'm always interested in tips and ideas. One thing I may have missed is did you talk about doing a pull test after connecting? I hear that can be complicated with auto-leveling systems but I think there is a specific sequence you can use to get the landing gear where you want it. Also when we disconnect we always drop the truck into neutral and take our foot off the brake to let it settle naturally after we have lifted the fifth wheel but before we try to open the jaws. This assumes we're on reasonably level ground of course. It usually makes it very easy to release the jaws.
@1StrangeAdventure
4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes, we do a tug test every time. I added a note on it but didn’t call it out. It’s pretty easy even with the auto level system. Rather than auto retract, you manually lift a little and perform it. I like the tip of putting it in neutral. Will have to try that out! Thanks for watching and sharing your expertise.

1StrangeAdventure What is your view on batteries? I have heard 6 volt batteries are the way to go. Do you agree and if so which ones would you go with? And would you go with 2 or 4 6 volt batteries? Thanks, Heber
@1StrangeAdventure
4 жыл бұрын
I've also heard that 6 volt batteries are a good option. A bit more compact and tend to be a cheaper option. The number of batteries you need is going to depend on what you are using them for. (Normal use w/ RV plugged in vs boondocking) I intend to upgrade our system at some point, but it will most likely be with the Battle Born lithium batteries and a solar system. Make sure to join the Grand Design forums on facebook. There are a lot of owners who have posted their battery upgrade projects. It has been very helpful for me.

Great video - thank you. We are newbies and just purchased a new-to-us 2022 Grand Design 311BHS. We have the Curt slider hitch on a 2022 RAM 2500 short bed truck and have only backed into driveways, campsites and storage areas just a few times, but completely forgot to use the slider mechanism (which caused a lot of heartache and stress by not using it because of the close proximity of the FW to the back window of our truck). We will certainly use it the next time we take the FW out of storage. However, do have questions regarding backing up with the slide engaged. If you're not completely satisfied with the angle while backing up, I would assume we would then need to stop the process of backing up, get out of the truck, engage back to the tow feature to pull up in order to straighten out. Is this a correct assumption? So, as newbies just wanted to confirm that if it takes us several tries to get into proper position for leveling, we would have to keep stopping the truck to engage back and forth between the tow position and the slide positions until we're properly in place to unhitch. Please confirm if these procedures would be a correct assumption. Thank you again, you do a fabulous job of making these complicated and stressful procedures much more manageable.

I just want to say Hi and thanks for watching 🤗 I know being a new RVer can be stressful and overwhelming sometimes so thank you for coming by to ask questions! As far as a slider hitch goes, you do not have to put it back in the tow position to maneuver around the campsite. Once you engage the slider, you can pull forward and back up as much as you need. You just don’t want to leave it that way to go down the road. It will put the weight of your FW in the wrong area of the truck.

On the front jacks do you adjust the length of the jacks using the pins prior to having the auto level system lower the front, or is that necessary?
@1StrangeAdventure

On the GD reflection, yes. I would lower them a bit and then use the auto level. On our Momentum, you don't have to do that.

I use a B&W Companion, 6.75 ft box, I turn 90° all day long, and haven't even used the turning point hitch yet, I'm not sure why your GD didnt come with the turning point. I can only assume you dont have a 150 series. If that's the case, you are probably over payload once your loaded. Have you scaled your rig loaded. I haven't seen a Ram 2500 with a payload over 2600 unless you run a has engine.

I just got a 2020 Solitude 310GK 5th wheel and have been told that if I can help it, not to extend the jacks any further than I have to as it puts a lot of pressure on the hydraulic system the more they are extended. My question is...I bought a 6 pack of those round leveling bucket and spent quite a bit on them but as it turns out, they only fit under the front two jacks. None of the jacks seem to be adjustable and I cannot fit these Blocks under the center or rear jacks. Is this normal and did I waste my $$ on the extra 4 blocks or is there something I don't know about using them on this model 5th wheel RV? Thannx to anyone who may be able to answer my question. Scott
@1StrangeAdventure
Жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! The further you extend the jacks the more movement you will feel inside as well. I sometimes have the same problem with the buckets. I have found that 4 of them adds a lot of stability. Sometimes I will put them under the fronts, then disconnect the vehicle. Then lower the front jacks all the way so that the rear actually goes up some. I’ll then put the buckets under the back and raise the front back up. Be careful with them and always use wood under them if on ground or gravel. These rigs are so long it’s hard to find a site that is level for 50’. Other times I may use them in the middle. I really only get all 6 if I’m on a level concrete pad.

I'm looking for insights about using my Ram 2500 hemi for this model of 5th wheel. My payload is just under 2900#. I'm thinking of adding airbags and registering as 11000# gvwr with DOT to guarantee it will be street legal since the axel ratings, brakes, and tires should easily handle that for a few trips a year. I'm curious to hear what you do to help your Ram 2500 handle the load.

Hello and thanks for reaching out! Our 2500 is stock. While we do experience chucking from time to time, there has never been an instance where our truck struggled to carry the RV. I will say if the RV is fully loaded, you will be close to the payload so be sure to weigh it from time to time to keep an eye on it. Thanks!
