Since 2005, there has been a sixfold increase in Kentucky of babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) - from 175 babies in 2005 to more than 1,050 babies in 2014. This rise in exposure can be attributed partly to the surge in heroin abuse. The surge in heroin abuse has also contributed to a rise in HIV infection.
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss the epidemiology and pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection during pregnancy and its impact on maternal and fetal health.
2. Review treatment strategies for HIV-positive mothers and their newborns.
3. Discuss available local assistance and referral resources for HIV care.
