A cinematic montage featuring one of our favourite 'haunts', Hoi Hing Building 海興大樓 in Tai Kok Tsui 大角嘴.
It was built in 1964 with 9 floors housing 250 families. Tai Kok Tsui is primarily a lower-income working class neighbourhood surrounded by industrial buildings.
Hoi Hing's demise began in 2008 when its land was purchased by Henderson Land which is voraciously gentrifying the neighbourhood. Some residents resisted the move and continued to stay for the next following years. But its fate was sealed in 2013 after a brutal double murder: Then 23-year-old Henry Chau killed and decapitated his parents in their apartment. The building earned the moniker "Broken Corpse Building". Many residents then began to move out due to bad feng shui. Since then, a series of mysterious fires and robberies also plagued the last few remaining tenants. In summer of 2017, Henderson Land finalised its purchase of the land and began demolishing Hoi Hing the following October.
