To me this is the most entertaining tennis match I've ever watched, such a high level from both players for all 5 sets. I remember watching it live and hoping that Tipsarevic would win it, but Federer was just too good on these faster courts.

Crosby4hyg compare 2007 to 2008 courts and then you’d realise how diabolically slow the courts were from 2008 to 2016. Ironically the only AO fed won in that time was 2010, the slowest court of all time. They sped up the courts in 2017 & 2018.

yeah Janko was playing and got really lucky too. I don't see him play like this in most of other events. Just indicates how good you have to be to beat Federer, even at Janko's level we see here, its still not enough.

Janko has played some other really good matches but has been plagued with injuries, the main reason he hasn't really been out there winning stuff.

It's just unbelievable!! the level of this match was so high! they have showed so many skills in this match, mental, physical strength, lucidity, cleverness and for more than 4 hours ! How is it possible to play with the same intensity during so many hours? It's not human! Tipsarevic deserved the victory as well as Federer!

Tipsarevic has a brutal backhand , so clean. Played incredible here. Whats happened to him recently? hasnt even been on tour in 2014

He's been injured for about a year now. Recently just made his announcement that he's returning to the tour next year in 2015. Unfortunately he pulled out of the Aussie with a lung disease. He's back though.

That was an incredible match. A real shame that Tipsarevic's career got sidelined by so many injuries...he could have made it to a few major finals if he had stayed healthy. Really enjoyed watching him play.

Just wow! This in my opinion is one of the best matches ever. Both players on fire simultaneously. If Tipsarevic played this well consistently, he would easily be in Top 5! Sheer brilliant hitting by both.

probably one of the most dramatic days in Australian Open history - this match went so far over time, that the later scheduled Hewitt/Baghdatis match didn't finish until 4:40am the following morning!!

I see your point but u can tell fed was not right in this match just by how much he was sweating which is unusual for him, I was a fan of safin but think he wasted a lot of his talent he could of won a lot more than just 2 slams between 2000-2005 .

And truthfully, not many people apart from Rafa were able to challenge him at least in the grand slams, as he made the semi-finals of the AO, finals in RG and Wimby and got the trophy at the US open. That's quite a good year, ignoring his standards at the time

Nah he got mono at the end of 2007. Not taking anything away from Djokovic, he might have won either way, but give the man his due. Getting to the semis with that sickness is pretty unbelievable.

This match shows what you need to do to beat Federer. You need deep returns above all. If you don't have it, you're target practice on Federer's serve. Janko has beautiful game overall when playing well, but returns in particular - not so much. On the other hand, guess who does the work usually with his amazing returns...? :)

Safin's Backhand was his most consistant shot, and he was always consistant with it. It was his forehand and movement (post 2005 knee injury and surgery), which really hindered him for the rest of his career. He did hit flat a lot of the time, but he could also create angles at will, could go down the line with ease and could hit through the court crosscourt. He really could do anything with the backhand. Nalbandian is definitely more geared to angles. I would also add Agassi and Kafelnikov.

What ever happened to Tipsarevic? He was playing outta his mind in this match. If I had watched this back in 2008, I would have thought he has a very bright future ahead of him. He was a very well rounded player in this match, almost matching Federer in every department except power. He's always been on the radar since, but I really haven't seen him win many titles.

So when Fed played Monfils at the FO last year (and in 09) Gael got more support? It was pretty even. The French fans love Roger like their own. Logic and reason states that Fed is the most popular in most tournaments he plays at, and whenever he plays a home player he gets better support against them than most others.

But at the same time, federer is also going god mode. So there's nothing u can do. Tipsarevic might have greater talent, but he ain't utilizing them, Djokovic is the big man on tour now.

haha no need to apologise man i think you are right to an extent as tipsy played the match of his life but roger was suffering from mono here and it clearly affected him throughout the tourney and for much of the year. Credit to tipsy for making it a great, tense match but from start to finish feds was no where near his best but as you said showed flashes of excellence.
