Great video, have you tried to omit the buffer? The output current possible to source/sink should be sufficient to drive the LEDs directly. Especially if you use 1.5k as resistors (about 2mA if LED_fVol is 2.5V).

I don’t remember now, but I probably used the buffer to drive the LEDs because I was also using the data lines for inputs.

Bluetac a battery on top with a diode and a resistor. I seem to remember a similar set up so that you could remove the chip with the data still stored.

Nop...you just put data into it ...or extract data from it. As he said...be extra careful with the output enable pin ...to avoid a potential data bus crash.
