Tracy and colleagues from HMP Birmingham were aware of more restrictive regimes in healthcare, less association time and social contact, and reduced access to activity. In response to this, and after listening to service users, they developed the in-cell activity pack for service users in HMP Birmingham.
The in-cell activity pack, which is issued monthly, enables service users to engage in everyday occupations, even when spending a considerable amount of time locked in their cells.
Despite the prison regime, and the unpredictability of the environment, the pack offers a range of activities that address educational, psychological and social needs. These range from creative arts, physical exercises, reading for wellbeing and activities for daily living that are deemed essential to support patients under a recovery model of care.
