On November 13, 1941, the Royal Navy's first purpose-build aircraft carrier was torpedoed by a German submarine, U-81, in the Mediterranean Sea within sight of the Rock of Gibraltar. The torpedoes struck HMS Ark Royal's starboard side, causing extensive damage to the bottom of her hull. Despite prolonged efforts to save the ship, it eventually capsized and sank the following day, November 14, 1941.
