I recall an Upper Yardman (what these guys were called in the late 70s early 80s) at HMS Caledonia who went on to become a submarine captain and commodore, top bloke. The RN wouldn’t survive now without SD officers, particularly in the technical branches.

In my time the Army (1989 to 2017), Officers promoted from Warrant Officer ranks tended to be respected by all but still weren’t seen as ‘real’ Officers by the others in the Mess. I always thought the RN had the highest amount of Officers commissioned from the ranks? Is that true?

I was an RMech 1 submariner and recommended for SD for two years and due to leave in November 1968. The exam was January 1969. I didn't sign on and have never regretted it. There was a stigma in being an SD officer.

During the '60s, 4 div. officers (elec tech). Two were SDs. My de-mob papers clearly identify the reason for that stigma.

Looks like a decent course. Pleased times have changed regarding those commissioning from the ranks these days. RN is too small for such snobbery.

I'm ex job and on board hms intrepid about 88 we had a couple of SD officers on board. They were never really treated as REAL officers by the wardroom or by the lower deck. The sub of in June 1988 at hms nelson was an ex rpo, still worked as a regulator officer, was a right prat. But most of them were really brand new.

Was it really that hard for an Ex rating to get a commission and be accepted ?- I'm non military , but I thought that in the strict regime of the RN it would be fairly regular, or did the RN not promote from the ranks much?. I always wanted to join the RN but I failed the medical, twice, so it was a no go for me, sadly.

There where plenty of SD Officers serving in boats (submarines to skimmers!), in the Technical Branches concerned with propulsion and weapons systems. Oh yes, and it was a good course.

just shows the class systems was even worse at ratings level, jealousy and resentment
