My great grandfather with his team of divers helped extract the deceased in this shipwreck. He also granted the British navy one of his lands to use as a graveyard for this purpose. This graveyard is still open for the public and is the only one in Tripoli of its kind. For his efforts, Queen Victoria granted Abdallah Ghazi, my great grandfather the main Clock of HMS Victoria (which still is in our family today). Her majesty also granted him in a letter the position of an honorary ambassador of the UK and the option to reside there at any time. Unfortunately this letter was destroyed upon the arrival of the Ottoman Empire to Lebanon as any evidence that linked you to the UK was considered an act of treason.

My Great Grandfather survived the sinking. There were terrible stories of the men throwing themselves off the stern as sne went down by the head, straight into the spinning props. He was Henry Fisher, Warrant Officer RN.

I wouldn't think it overly safe there at present, considering what is going on in the region.

@MrHobiecat I guess that depends on the person. To me a wreck underwater is very different (though perhaps equally beautiful) to an old ship rotting away on land.

@MrHobiecat A patch of dirt outside someone's house isn't very exciting. Stick it atop a mountain and people will scramble to get there.

I have only recently become aware of this wreck, and of her vertical penetration into the seabed, a fate she shares with the Tzar's lost Ironclad, the Rusulska! Until I saw a video on the wreck of the Victoria I believed that only the Rusalka had carved her way into the soft seafloor, coming to rest vertically entombed forever! It is of course quite possible that other wrecks have met the same fate, but as yet they remain undetected.

these old pre dreadnought ships are pretty interesting. the victoria was "famous" for her huge guns which were slow firing and even by the poor standards of the day pretty inaccurate. I couldnt quite work out if you managed to get to the area where the camperdown hit as the interior shots were unsurprisingly disorientating!

The Camperdown hit forrard of the guns and she sank bow first and now stands her bows buried in the bottom and her stern pointing towards the surface. To get anywhere near the bows a diver would need special gasses or a specialised diving suit because of the depth.
