I agree, especially if Tyco's PowerTorque motors/drives were built with quality - the concept of a PowerTorque is actually brilliant, maintenance is easy, traction tire replacement is easy, etc. But poor quality parts resulted in pinion gears popping off and bad motors that burn out; 2 major issues that plague Tyco PowerTorques.

I had a few Tyco trains as a kid. I just loved them so much that I didn't realize how janky they were until I started model railroading and had some athearn, Walthers, and life-like stuff and realized how cheap Tyco was but I kept some of the rolling stock and converted the horn hook couplers to Kadee knuckle couplers

A lot of the Tyco rolling stock was actually pretty nice. I still have a few pieces with Kadee couplers and trucks with RP25 wheels. Some of the shells looked like they came from the same molds as Athearn and MDC shake-the-box kits. Even as a kid, I tried to stick to cars with prototype names, although I didn't really mind the "Purina Chows" hopper and "Old Dutch Cleanser" covered hopper.

As a kid in the early 70's, I remember this layout from the Tyco catalogs. I was only allowed a 4'x8' sheet of plywood and that was too small. Now as an old adult I see that the layout was only a 5'x8' and if I was smart enough back then, I probably could have gotten a 1'x8' piece of plywood and attached it somehow to the main board. Anyways, Star Wars came along in 1977 and those toys made me give up on the trains, Sizzlers by Mattel and other past interests. LOL

My favorite Christmas present growing up, was a Tyco Chattanooga Choo Choo set I received when I was about 10. My parents bought it at a JC Penney’s back when they carried toys and model trains in the 1970’s. I remember wanting many of those buildings and accessories that were shown in the catalog that came with the train set. I am still into model trains though I collect and model mostly N scale now. I do have some HO Bicentennial pieces I kept by Life-Like. Thanks for sharing your layout, brought back some happy memories.

Awesome setup. Dad passed a few years ago and mom gave me his Tyco train set, which was really my older brothers. My sun is really starting to get into the model trains. We were looking threw the family photo album while waiting for the Turkey to cook, and saw the pictures of my older brother opening the trains on Christmas morning many years. The pictures reminded me of the red crane car and hopper. I Googled it to see how hard it would be to add them back to the set. It brought up this video. Watching it reminded me of a lot of things that were part of Dads set. Hey he had that, and that, and that... This makes me want to do the same, Tyco only. Thanks for reminding me of the many Great memories of sneaking into the brothers room and playing with all these.

Wow, memories. As a kid in the late 70s my first train set was a Tyco, with that overhead piggyback unloader and a Union Pacific SD-24 locomotive. Later in the mid 80s I got the Tyco G.I. The two gold TYCO power packs you have; Model 899B (with the centered "TYCO" logo) is the 1975-79 version, and Model 899BT (with the left-aligned "TYCO TRAIN POWER PACK") is the 1980-81 version.

Nice video! I’m definitely not a tyco collector, but I do have a factory sealed tyco piggyback Freight set with “sears action features.” I don’t know if it’s rare or not but I can’t find any photos or mention of the set online. It has the piggyback trailer operating loader/unloader, horse car and depot set, and is an oval set with a siding. It also has two Santa fe gp20s for some reason despite the box art only showing one. Don’t know if they’re both powered or if tyco made dummy locomotives. Aside from that set, I have the Burlington northern gp20, the new haven f7, and the Kansas Durango Colorado gp20 and matching spotlight car/caboose. Hope you see this, as this is a kind of old video.

My engine starts but my wheels don’t move. Do you know how to fix this
@RPModelRailroads
3 жыл бұрын
Well, that depends. Is it a Tyco? By "engine starting" do you mean the motor runs(lights work) but the gears and wheels don't move? If so, it most likely is a gear issue, and if it's a Tyco, I'm pretty sure it is a PowerTorque motor.
@yetigaming79
3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is
@RPModelRailroads
3 жыл бұрын
@@yetigaming79 Check the PowerTorque motor truck, on the gear side, and most likely your issue is caused by a loose or missing pinion gear. It is the smallest gear which connects to the main drive rod that goes thru the pancake motor on the inside. If that's the case, which is a common Tyco PowerTorque issue, there are various ways to fix this. The best method I've used is "roughing-up" the surface of the drive rod with a drill bit, apply a little bit of liquid cement, and then put the pinion gear back on. Others have put a drop of solder on top the reinstalled pinion gear. There are various YT videos out there about this, and I do plan on doing a video on repairing a PowerTorque, as well as how to properly care for one, in the future.
