This is a great example of how to operate realistically with others on an ops session. No unreasonable or unrealistic speeds on the layout and coupling to equipment.

I do a lot of critique on model railroading. I have modeled and been a railfan of the Pittsburgh Steel mill scene for many years. Outstanding scenery and presentation. The URR is difficult to model because it is hard to railfan except in certain area. The scene at 16:32 ( you there every minute since 7:00) with the old 40’ box car, shrubs, the left eroding creek bed, and rip rap is phenomenal! it’s a twisted ankle area ready to happen. The Chlorine tanks are authentic The burnt spot on the URR hopper is authentic as hell (that’s what happens around a mill). KEYX PLE D&H P&S are great. The yellow container converted to office is phenomenal. I do not point out negatives unless the author brags about the obvious. Then I’m forced to point them out. Great prototypical work. Very well done. As an inactive railfan it is good to see such attention to detail displayed. Back in the late 60's and early 70's I did a lot of train watching and was able to gain access to many of the local towers. Watching the conductors picking up train orders from the hoop was always interesting. I got to pull switches and on one very icy day I helped dig out a stuck switch and with two others we cranked the switch into alignment with a minute to spare. Train air line connections take time to set. I have watched crews doing the walk of pain trying to find one broken connection on a 140-car ore drag, not fun in the winter.

This is interesting to watch. In the yard, particularly, trains run very slow. As conductor, I'm often "on the ground" walking ahead of the movement, so the radio instruction might be, "URR 102, I've got your point from the ground, backup 15 cars, walking speed." Also, true to prototype, we sometimes roll along an adjacent track and write down car numbers as we go. So, we are definitely not in a hurry. Overall, if you watch yard jobs anywhere, it may seem like everything is barely crawling around. Yard crews are thinking about safety, rules compliance, etc. So, slow operation is the name of the game.

Very nice ops video Steve. Here is a short ops video I made last year with an older camera. The video quality is not as good and my N scale MP15DC's don't have sound, so I added background music to the video. Long Valley Branch Ops Video --> kzitem.info/news/bejne/roSAv3iieoViiW0 And I agree, if you switch a slow safe speeds and take time to throw switches and tie on handbrakes, it adds to your "play time" Mine video is just it's a little over 10 minutes just to switch out two industries. Hi Steve @@stephenjohnson26 Thank You for the compliments. The Long Valley Branch is different than most model railroads, instead of freelancing a railroad, I freelanced a branch line and have several prototype railroads operate the branch line, but not all at the same time. The Long Valley Branch is Sort of like a shared assets line. But to add to that, the time period also changes and I have appropriate rolling stock and automobiles for each time period. For the P&WV, the time period is 1960. The P&LE time period is 1974 and alternate time period of 1980. The Conrail time period is 1980. There are a few others, that show up from time to time, but I think you get the idea. I could not choose just one prototype, so instead I choose a generic branch that would look at home with different railroads operating the branch. Cheers, Rich S.

Every car in a train has a purpose. Specific cars are selected for specific reasons. On the real railroad you can't just swap a boxcar for a boxcar. Yardmasters are given specific cars for specific customers and must pick which cars in their yards will be used for a specific train.

Locomotives are capable of amazing things so long as the engineer knows how to operate them.
