What a lovely thing to share. I do a program at a local nursing home where I play guitar and sing old hymns and songs with my friends and tell some stories, jokes, and fun facts. The residents love it. That might be something you and maybe your friend would enjoy doing, too.

imagine, at one time that's how all knowledge was passed down, plus old people say some crazy things because they could care less who hears them so they're a ton of fun. i have this 75 year old aunt who looks at these "younger" guys in their late 50's, early 60's aunt she likes to tell me about how she'd tear them up and ruin them for other women because those "young gals" can't please a man like she can.

In 1946 I was a first grader in SE Kansas at a 2 room country school. Our teacher for the first 4 grades was quite musical and played the piano and we sang in that class room. Our performance for one of the well attended school performances (not much else for the community to do in those days) was all 4 grades on the stage singing Oh Buttermilk Sky. Looks like that was the year the song was written. I still sing it and remember some of the fun movements Ms. Riley taught us to act out as we sang!!

Listening to Hoagy Carmichael sing takes me back to the treasured memories of childhood. They actually had record stores, in those days, and I would stop in, on the way home from school, to listen to Hoagy's smooth voice singing "Old Buttermilk Sky." I hated to drink buttermilk but I loved to hear him sing the song with the same title. The lovely memories, of years gone by, are priceless treasures!

Hoagie also did a great “cover”...of his own song! His rendition of “Stardust” is so creatively different (from the dozens of artists who recorded it...) so glad I found this. Hoagy Carmichael released this song in 1946 on ARA Records. But he certainly wasn't the only one who recorded the song that year. Also in 1946, Paul Weston and his Orchestra (Matt Dennis - lead vocals) released a version for Capitol Records. Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers brought out a version that year on RCA Victor. Kay Kyser and his Orchestra also released a version, on Columbia Records, in '46. Lead vocals performed by Mike Douglas, best remembered as the host of The Mike Douglas Show, from 1961 to 1981. Bing Crosby performed the song on "Philco Radio Time", on November 27, 1946. Dennis Day sang the tune on Jack Benny's show, "The Lucky Strike Program" on December 8, 1946. Not uncommon in those days for multiple artists to record, and have hits with, the same song at the same time.
