This was my mother's "theme song" and she sang it when I was little and all through her life. The night she died in 1994, my husband, my grown children and I, gathered in our home to celebrate Mom's life. Our minister friend came and sang "Ave Maria" in my mother's honor. Then he asked if any of us would like to sing a favorite song of Mom's. Without saying a word, we all broke out in "Darktown Strutters Ball." Thanks for the memories, and thanks to my cousin for sending me this link.

I am 72 and hadn't heard this song since I was a little girl. It suddenly popped into my mind while I was in the shower the other day and it stuck. It's definitely a nice "ear worm" to have as the last one was Disney's "Small World" song. That one almost drove me crazy!

My grandfather was born two year AFTER this song came out. He used to sing it all the time, along with another "Daring Young Man on the Fyling Trapezze". I remember it as "I'll be down to get you in a push-cart, honey, two steps we're gonna have it all, at the Downtown Strutter's Ball". Either my memory sucks or my grandfather threw in his own lines. :) Thanks for posting.

The greatest thing about music, especially old music, is the diversity it takes on over the decades. I'm an old Fla boy and I always heard it "I'm gonna dance right outa my shoes, When they play those General Blues..." A few other deviations through the song as well... I love it. Think of all the transference of styles and influences over the many years. Sincerely.
