Yes, the mind of a hoarder must definitely be complex but when the illness invades the neighbors with many negative occurrences (rats and animal feces, as well as lowering the neighbors house values and in this case, making it pretty impossible for a homeowner to sell his house due to living next door to a harder, then the courts do need to step in and set a definite time to have all the items hauled away. The illness could then be addressed by local medical teams.

Our basement was the size of an entire full level of our house, filled to where you only had one narrow path. As a kid, I used to lose my patience and clean down there in the middle of the night (so they couldn't stop me) in a manic frenzy, often till 5 or 6am. Sometimes I would get so upset I would stop being quiet or have a meltdown. Sometimes they would call the police. They didn't appreciate what I did and it never took; In my 20's when I was living on my own, I could come home and see every area or room I had cleaned up was chaos again. I think with any disorder it comes down to self discipline. Of course it's never that "easy" just like losing weight or drinking too much or whatever the issue, stopping comes down to consistently working on your self discipline. It's something I struggle with so even if I can spend 30 min a day working on something to improve my life I've been noticing I can improve things slowly. For me I am disorganized and while I'm not obese I def need to exercise and eat better. Take it one day at a time. Every day think what can I do to make this situation better. You might not always succeed but success is a journey and there will always be great days as well as bad days. Get a goodwill box and every week or every other week try to fill it up. Its never easy but you got this!

Thanks for sharing. Would you be comfortable sharing the type of trauma or what is that compels the hoarding? I have a hoarding issue of sorts. It is very mild and I have mostly quit letting myself have anything else unless I get rid of something of equal or greater size. Even for clothes now, I just buy a weeks worth of the same clothes, so that I don't think about clothes at all. I have a "uniform" and that's all I need to have. Nothing is precious. But for hobbies, It's like I have sort of an analysis paralysis on whether I need to keep something. Everything is something I wish I could get to using. Almost like I spend most of my energy on self-doubt or just making enough money to escape the thing that makes me money.

He needs to be institutionalized. The neighbors said in interviews they've cleaned the home several times and he doesn't want help/continues to trash things. The house is now a danger to the community and to his elderly mother. This is elder abuse/neglect for his mother who is too old to help. He needs to be put in an institution and monitored, he is a danger to the community collecting biohazard material at his home.

Especially his mother though, as the city didn't clean the inside of his house and that old frail woman has to live her last year's in such a disgusting, unhealthy, and unsafe home. Honestly the city needs to step in and give the homeowner 2 choices: option 1 mandatory therapy and a complete clean out with the therapist or option 2 the city will come in and remove ALL items from the outside of the property and foreclose the house and tear it down and send the owner the bill. I fully understand it is a mental health issue but if the mentally ill can avoid facing the problem they will and we need to stop coddling them and screaming about their rights when their unhealthy behavior is affecting everyone around them.
