Did a video recently with my Champ S+ and I was saying Horizon needs another 2s brushless rtf UMX. This looks like a great one, I think anyone can be successful with this. My only concern is the RTF price, an Aeroscout is not much more but it's a lot more plane for the money. Great video Adam and a nice release from Horizon, curious to see what other micro planes the future will bring.

Hello! I have to say two things! 1. Finally a brand launches, in my opinion, the perfect trainer, economical, easy to fly, full of features that allow you to evolve, perfect size, etc. 2. Finally, there is a well-documented video in these examples of rc models, it is very common to see a video like 'Hey, what a cool little plane I have'. But with you I was very impressed by the professionalism that the entire team put into making this video. And for that, THANK YOU! I do have a question. You've mentioned that Horizon is planning STL protocol in the UMX line. 1. Do you when is this due? 2. Will the Air Tractor be affected by this? I really hope so Again thank you and great video!

(The older I get the more not common sense I encounter) I have the mini apprentice and the wee sport Cub S which for the price here in NZ was a disappointment..... This sub 250gm stol 700mm makes sense. The mini apprentice is one of my absolute favorites !!! Recently I've purchased crashed rc planes through marketplace and repaired them (funkycub 1800, avios bushmule, savagebobber.....) all appear to have been flown once / maybe twice, uncommon sence has been great for my hanger but I feel for those new pilots who didn't have a great experience and were probably put off....... With a UMX plane the board is locked from programming, so you can't disengage SAFE completely, but it should be on your gear switch so you can flip between AS3X and SAFE. Also it won't recognize servo travel in the TX, so you have to make manual adjustments by moving the ball link in on the control horn. That said, we didn't have to do that to have plenty of throw. You get much less throw in SAFE. Switch it to AS3X and you'll have more throw.

Great for beginners, but for pilots who have made it past first plane this is a no go. I'm not sure how HZ calls this a STOL plane without flaps. It looks like a toy, unlike UMX models, they are beautiful. It doesn't come with a box that as its container. After saying that: i will be recommending this model to my cousin as his first plane.

Hey Brian. It is a great plane for beginners and recommending it to a new pilot is a great idea, but I have some things for you to consider based on your other observations... A plane doesn't have to be an Edge 540 for an experienced pilot to have fun with it. I did. It's also a great idea for experienced pilots to have something they don't mind letting would be new pilots try. Whether it is or isn't for an experienced pilot is a matter of opinion...not a set in stone fact. Not all STOL planes have flaps, and that isn't what determines if a plane is or isn't a STOL plane...short take off and landing distance, and usually the capability to operate from surfaces that are not smooth does. Having flown both I can attest that it can take off and land in the same amount of space a UMX Timber does, and from most of the same areas. You punch and pull with either one and they're off the ground instantly...flaps or not. Just FYI, the Apprentice STOL has a higher lift airfoil overall. The UMX Timber has more capability elsewhere though. The idea behind the Apprentice STOL is to give a new pilot some options with it after they learn to fly...like STOL flying and basic aerobatics...while keeping it easy to learn with. It looks like a trainer to me, not really a toy. Lots of dihedral, and over sized eppennage for added stability. Most good trainers look that way. Again though...this is a matter of opinion. Finally, the box is the container if a pilot wishes to use it. That's why the assembly was designed the way it is. The wings use wing bolts, and are purposely easy to remove as is the gear so it can be stored/transported in the box.

@@ModelAV8RChannel Thank you for the explanation! I did not realize planes can be considered STOL planes without flaps. The box, yes it can be broken down, to fit in the box really easy, probably better protected too. I have to remind myself that Eflite and HobbyZone are two different companies under one parent. I will be picking up one shortly for my buddies birthday and try to get him into the hobby. I am happy this came out so new pilots have one less hurdle too worry about before their first flight.

Yeah man, when you think about it...most RC planes are STOL planes on takeoff if you punch and go. Lol. They are all so overpowered compared to scale that even a lot of warbirds can be off the ground in a plane length or two. With some like the Apprentice STOL the wing loading is so low, and there is so little mass (Wing Cube loading) that once they are on the ground they almost stop instantly. It is a great thing to pass the hobby on to others Brian. That is the most significant thing any of us will ever do in it. Your buddy is lucky to call you a friend.

Is the Timber X not a good trainer? Or please explain your answer @@ModelAV8RChannel

What about for someone currently flying at beginner/intermediate and ready to switch to advanced?@@ModelAV8RChannel

No, the X isn't a good trainer. It's intended for more aggressive aerobatics/3D. You need intermediate skills. Good 2nd plane, not a good 1st one.

A nice startup plane, looks like a great flyer. Mind you, you make flying look effortless with your skills. 🫡
