In this trial of the new side shift Hobie Drop-in, there definitely were a few changes
that need to be made with the system. Outside of the FPV mount being turned 180
degrees to add about 4 inches of forward spacing, the shifter needs to be positioned
toward the front and side mounted for easier control. In the next trial I will add a
short u-joint tiller extension running down the right gunnel for throttle. This would
prevent any leaning to control the engine speed and make it easier the activate the
kill switch. This is why Kayak Buddys trials all systems, and changes the scope of
design when better ergonomics are needed. The system still impressed with a top
speed of 6.1 mph, but the top cruise speed was safely in the 5.4-5.7 mph range with
about 3 clicks into the throttle. Running wide open doesn’t make sense when Hobie
kayaks tend to plow the bow when forward torque is applied midship. The noise
resonation on camera is definitely louder than on the deck decibels when running.
Being only a few feet away and having the echo coming off the hull is hard to bypass
on a GoPro.
Part 2 will be coming up soon with all of these changes mentioned above.
