I have always used the Hawaiian righting line from Murreys, never had a problem

Have you used it? Can't find a video anywhere actually in use.

I second this question. I recently bought a 16 that had this system, and it seems to simply act as an extra righting line? I wasn't sure how to use it any differently in order to right it solo

Takes a while but seems to work fine in calm water with very limited wind. When I'm in choppy water with 10+ winds, I'm thinking this would not be easy; see if you can do a video on a choppy, windy day.

That’s pretty smooth, the balance point looks to be a foot aft of the mast, good to know. I would be more inclined to mount it along the length of the hull on one side, is there a reason you store it under the beam rather than the inside of the deck under the tramp?

Hi Mike thanks for your comments. Storing at the front seems to work ok for me, it dosen’t seem to interfere with anything and is relatively easy to access no matter which hull is in the water. I did think of mounting it as you’ve suggested but I thought it may add to the drag when sailing, whereas placing across the front dosent impact on performance. Perhaps I’ll take another look at the mounting location just to be sure. I think your right about the location of the pivot point, I should move it 6 inches or so forward. Cheers

@@sailingrye ohhh right, it’s easy to access no matter what side is in the water, i didn’t think about that!

I will try to rig something like this. Have you seen any damage to the gunnel over time? My cat is a Nacra 5.2 and deck mounted beams. Will have to try and find a spot to put the lever end. Thanks for the video and parts list. It is clear and concise.

Thanks for the comment, there’s no damage at all to the gunnel. Once everything is set up correctly it works a treat. Perhaps you could use the pivot point on the underside where the front cross beam meets the hull?

@@sailingrye Thanks SailingRye. I will try that.

Good work on the concept and execution, however I'd be a bit concerned about potential damage to the gunnels. Is there no risk of levering the deck off the hulls? It's mechanism to me is not unlike using a screwdriver to pry open a paint tin lid! I'm probably way off but I'd be keen to know why😊

Thanks for your comments. I’ve kept a close eye on the gunnels, monitoring for any signs of stress or wear but it looks normal with no change. I hope it stays that way because I must say I’ve tried many different methods to right the boat solo including the righting bag, but I can honestly say this method has worked every time without fail. I’ll continue to monitor it.

Hi, thanks for the video, I would love to have the length of each parts or a little drawing (you may have Say it but my english is not so good). Thanks by advance.

No problem. Leave it with me and I’ll put a drawing together with the basic specs. Next time I’m down at the place where I store it I’ll get the measurements and send it through. Might be week or two away.

perfect thanks for sharing.I've been struggling with the righting bag and will give this a go. I always sail the 16 with crew but being confident I could right it solo would mean it gets a lot more use. Luckily I also have a 14 which is perfect for sailing solo.

@@HobieCat68 once you have it set up correctly you’ll have greater confidence heading out solo. I haven’t had a situation yet that it hasn’t worked when needed. One of the most practical additions I made to my boat. If you require any further details, let me know.

Yes that’s the downside, however if your sailing solo I’ve found that trying to use just a righting line or righting bag is hit or miss. The righting pole works every time. I can go sailing solo with confidence knowing that if/when I capsize I can get myself back upright with out any issues. If sailing with a crew I just use the righting line.
