I prefer the Propel drive. The worst thing I've done to it was slammed into an underwater tree/stump (and I mean slammed!) All it did was bend my shear pin. I probably could have hammered it back, but I just replaced it instead for a few bucks. I seriously doubt the Mirage drive could have taken that hit without being completely destroyed. That's a testimony to the durability of the propel drive!
@AliexFolgueira

Ohh yeah the Mirage would have lost some big parts there, the propel drive is more durable

Nice very useful information , thank you to share . If you have a mirage drive can you replace with propeller drive system? Does it need modifications?
@s302jzget

The mirage drive is way less tiring vs the propel drive. I had both. With the propel, you must complete the revolution of the pedals to get the prop to spin vs the mirage drive where the pedals only need to move a few inches and yak will continously move forward with shorter strokes. This makes a huge difference after a few hrs or long distances on the water. The weight kills it for the propel, weight does make a difference even when it comes to performance, any weight after traveling long distances will wear you down and the small extra weight will start to stack up. Just my thought.

So what I really want to know about Hobie’s MD is even though the fins kick up, there’s still a portion of the drive that is exposed. Can it go over rocks in a shallow river without being damaged? Really trying to narrow my selection down to native Titan and a pro angler (or outback).
@fredaw61

I have done both drives as well and just wanted to add that the Slayer drive over a ling distance of peddling will wear on your body. So if you are in small bodies of water they are good, but if your fishing a bay or lake the Mirage drive is better. Thanks Aliex.

My biggest problem with pedal drive systems is that they use such a weak propeller. I don't mean they break easy, I mean they have such a small blade area. The reason why the Hobie drive is faster is because it has such big blades pushing water. Those tiny pedal props are like putting bike tires on a corvette. If I could design a kayak, it would have a prop that looked like the one on a trolling motor.

@@AliexFolgueira You mentioned it in the video. I'd like to try something similar with my Dorado. That beast is going to need the torque. The big problem is that it has such a small channel to lift the drive out through, the prop has to be able to fit through there.

Nice Job!! A lot of value in this video Aliex!! I agree most of it. I disagree about the comfort on pedaling...is not to me. This is not pedaling a bicycle. inside the Kayak your butt is on the floor and you are pedaling about your butt level. My knees and back feel the effort. Not quite with (or not so badly) the drive "push forward action" (I've told you, you are younger and better fitted probably) And the second is not so minor, STORAGE!!! ...the drive fits so well under the car seat, is lovely!! In all the rest you perfectly point with good aim. Congrats! Regards. Fred. PS: you forgot the sound (or noise) for some people the Humming of the pedal system may be annoying also for some fish in quiet places.

The mirage pedal system has torque and gets up to speed fast. Very important if you fish a wave break and need to get over waves in a hurry. Because of the torque you are also instantly maneuverable. This is important if a wave is breaking and is going to hit you in the side. I would never take a prop pedal system and fish in a wave break zone. They lack torque. The mirage drive also can tow traditional kayaks against a stiff breeze and current. I had to tow two kayaks in that simply could not make any headway against current and wind. Also mirage drive is better in shallow water because you can flutter the fins closer to the boat. The mirage drive is stealthy. I have hit fish with my kayak hull because they did not know i was there. Its the best system for heavy ocean conditions. My only issue with the drive is it will break. You will bend fin masts and tear fins and break parts. Usually when you are careless. I never leave the shore with out spare parts. I have had the hobie mirage drive since 2007.

Plus you can add a Ram ball with a triple ball mount and add even more stuff. Narrow space between the pedals, but there is some room. (Or alternatively you can add an extender and bring it above the pedal height and add anything you want to it, with no space limitations. You can't do that on a Hobie drive.
