A demonstration of the remote-control trap door release for the Team Toad Hog Trap.
A paracord line runs from the top of the gate to the trap doors, holding them up. The paracord has a loop on the end that is held by a "pelican" pin, which in turn is kept from rotating by the shaft of a push-pull solenoid.
When a radio-controlled relay closes, the solenoid pulls back, releasing the rotating and the loop is dropped.
The reason for such a complicated mechanism is (1) speed and (2) reliability.
The pelican pin uses a long lever arm to hold a relatively heavy weight with a much smaller force on the tip of the pin. That means the solenoid doesn't have much friction when it is "pulled".
