LMAO! As a seven year old kid when this came on, Sunday nights, on CBS, it was the greatest show on tv! And during the same week: Batman, Star Trek, Combat, plenty of westerns, and lots of soapy stuff for mom during the day. Surprising quality for only three broadcast networks at the time.

Do you understand the depth of what you just said? "Surprising quality for only three broadcast networks at the time". 50 years later, and we have been dumbed down by literally hundreds of choices. Everyone vying for your attention & dollar, we have descended to sub-par "entertainment"/reality garbage, home shopping networks, and all sorts of vapid crap. By definition, the more choice/venues, the more devaluation of quality. Back in the day when 3 networks had to vie for your attention, they had to be at the top of their game. I, for one, miss it tremendously.

Yes, in order to make sure none of the Nazis came across looking too sympathetic and thus showing disrespect to Holocaust survivors, all the chief Nazi roles were played by Jewish actors to ensure proper sensitivity. Including Hochstedder and Burkhalter. And LeBeau's story was incredible. He lost so many family members in the concentration camp; what a courageous man and survivor. He even managed to make a running gag on the show about forgetting his serial number - which was actually tattooed on his arm from being at the camp. I've forgotten the name of the episode where Carter dresses up as Hitler, but if you watch the scene where they all go 'Heil', Lebeau crosses his fingers; he wouldn't make the Nazi salute even as an act. I admired him so much.

I guess it depends on how much punishment you want to put up with or can take. This is all fantasy land or for haha's and really, being a German POW was probably preferable to being in a Japanese or North Vietnamese POW camp.

In reality they tortured and murdered the POW's but obviously nolt like the Biggest mass genocide the Germans did to the Jewish people.

Pros and Cons of being in Stalag 13 Pros: - Be working with the best group out there - Helping contribute to winning the war with all the escapes - Outsmarting the Germans and enjoy watching them fail. - Sargeant is lenient and won't tell on anyone about what he saw you do. - Colonel Klink is acts like an idiot. - Can go out into town through different ways including tunnels, gates, vehicles, and cars without being spotted. Cons - Have to keep their perfect no escape record in tact. - Have to boost the Germans' egos in keeping the camp escape-proof - Always have to be there for roll coll whether scheduled or not - Submit to the Germans' orders even if it's part of the plan. - Colonel Hogan gets the women. - Common vists by General Burkhalter and Major Hochstetter.

This show was so incredibly well done. When i was younger it was on UHF at dinner time, and my parents used to let me eat in my room so I wouldn't miss it. I can literally watch this over and over and over again and love every second of it.

The biggest giveaway in this series to prove it's all satirical is the manner in which the corporals, Newkirk & LeBeau, treat Staff Sergeant Kinchlowe and Master Sergeant Carter. In the US armed forces, enlisted ranks of E6, (Staff Sergeant & above), are Non-commissioned OFFICER ranks, (Except in the Marine Corps, where the duties of non-comms are given to the Marine at the rank of full corporal, - their rank structure as follows: Private, NO chevron. Private First Class, single Chevron. Lance Corporal, Single Chevron with background field colorized, either olive drab or red depending on which class uniform is being worn.and crossed rifles. Corporal, 2 chevron with colorized back field and crossed rifles. Sergeant, 3 Chevrons with colorized backfield and crossed rifles. Staff Sergeant, 3 Chevrons with colorized backfield and crossed rifles and a single rocker beneath the colorized backfield. Gunnery Sergeant, 3 Chevrons, colorized backfield with crossed rifles, 2 rockers. And above Gunnery Sergeant, things get fairly diverse in the United States Marine Corps, depending upon the Non-Comms E7-E9 ranks specific job within the command structure of the unit in which they serve,- there are more designators, such as the pineapple which signifies the Master Gunnery Sergeant rank, There are also the ranks of Sergeant Major , First Sergeant, and the Singular Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, rank, which is the absolute highest non-commissioned officer rank in the Marine Corps, signified by the 3 Chevrons colorized backfield, 4 rockers, the EAGLE, Globe & Anchor with a star on either side of it in the backfield. Personally, I think that this is the coolest Enlisted Uniform & Rank insignia on ANY Military Uniform in the world! If you ever see the Commandant and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps in their Dress Blues, - you'll never forget it! As for Hogan's Heroes, there is no way any American Sergeant would put up with the bullsh*t that Newkirk & Lebeau dole out to Carter, EVEN IF they're volunteer operatives from foreign services! Colonel Hogan would not have allowed it, primarily because a small unit like this with HUGE RESPONSIBILITIES, would depend upon maintaining a high moral, - nearly impossible understanding such high stress! The corporals would have had to show a lot more respect and reverence for their superior non-comms than they do Carter, whose character is constantly under pressure as the squads munitions expert!

I took two years of German in high school, beginning in the fall of 1965 when Hogan's Heroes premiered on TV. My German professor looked a lot like Klink and he was as funny as Shultz -- and could speak the lines, "I know nuffink, I see nuffink" just perfectly. The students all loved him.
