I own a couple Golden Melodies myself and they sound amazing. I prefer my harmonica tone to sound bright and they provide a very bright tone on the ones that I have (I currently have them in G, C, Db, Eb, and E). The reason why I bought them is that I found out that my favorite harmonica player and biggest inspiration on harp, Terry McMillan (a famous Nashville session player who was really popular in country and Christian music during the 80s, 90s, and 2000s) played them and I wanted to sound like him. Even though most of my harmonicas were Special 20s, I grew a soft spot for them and I knew it was the time to make a switch. I usually play them in Country music and a little bit of Blues (here comes the elitists trying to say they don't belong in blues), but I don't mind playing them in other genres or position. They are such a versatile harmonica and I'm glad to be a Golden Melody user.

I have a C and a G Navy Band, which are early versions of the GM...which I bought in 1968 at the Acoma Music store on Market St. in San Francisco. I loved them then, and I love them now. Used to play them in the tile lined Stockton Tunnel, late at night when there was no traffic - for the huge reverb.

Hi really great video, I was wanting to start learning the harmonica and learning in particular blues music. I have narrowed my search down to the Hohner Blues Harp, the Marine Band and the Golden Melody. Which would you say is the best for a beginner wanting to play blues??? Thanks very much.

HI I got a really urgent question. Which harmonica would you choose between the golden melody or the marine band. I'm wanting to learn blues on the harmonica. Which would be the best for it? I prefer the look of the golden melody, plus it looks easier to hold, and more comfortable. Thanks for your help.

GM’s are sweet sounding harps. I play Seydels mostly, but if I want a melody to sing, gotta have a Golden Melody - it’s that equal tempered tuning! Rachel Plas, one of the best player out there, uses the Golden Melody exclusively.

Recently bought a Golden Melody, was disappointed in the cover plates they protruded out further than the plastic comb. And was uncomfortable on the lips after playing for a short period I would have to stop, and. go back to my special 20.I don't know if this is the same on all of them,t was a shame because I liked the tone but am reluctant to purchase another encase its the same. Would appreciate any comments if this was a one off or are they all the same.
@harmonicamastery

I've not seen that Brian. The cover plates should be flush with the comb. The reed plates protrude a tiny bit - like half a mil - but I don't find that a problem. Maybe yours is set up wrongly? Can you ask at the place of purchase? Compare yours to the hi-res pics on the Hohner website and see if it's 'normal'.

Back in the days when Dylan and Donovan and Neil Young came out, I was playing folk music on My Guitar and of course had to play a harp. I enjoyed that but my playing was messy, not knowing how to really play individual notes. Now that I'm 73, I bought some golden melodies as I've been learning more about the subject. I'm looking forward to learning how to really play with technique that I didn't have the patience for when I was in my early twenties. Now I have at least the KZitem videos to develop. I did have such a problem with an American-made “Marine Band style” (yes, we once made things here). And yes, the reeds were hitting both the covers and the facing reed plate. I solved it by shimming the plastic comb with a carefully installed layer of plastic, and by bending one cover up a bit, which looks kind of crummy, but it has worked just fine for years. Another advantage is that the shim is white, which always tells me instantly which side is up.

I don't think so but look on Hohner's site or learn to do the tuning yourself - what could possibly go wrong? !
Basically, they play like the one in this video, except that a) you have to look upon each side-by-side pair of holes (4 reeds) as being equivalent to one hole (2 reeds) on the above, and b) they're not so easy to bend and overblow..I don’t think “serious” players would use them, though they can produce an occasional change of timbre in a performance.
