Why was the Lord only responsible in your mind for the good things? Why not the tough times, too? If the Lord really existed, and if he were looking out for you, he might have been a bit nicer and spared you the tough times, no? In order to believe any religion, you have to leave logic and basic common sense at the door. Life is way too short to be doing that.

Thank you for that trip down memory lane . My dad was a harmonica player , most especially before coming to America from Zwartsluis NL . He and two other harmonica players formed a trio that played all the bars around Holland . If I remember one guy played a double harmonica 14 or 16 inches long that was hinged . The other guy played a large 12 or 14 inch ( likely metric sizes) and my dad played an 8 inch or so and they were very popular . This was back in the late 40's and early 50's

I took accordion lessons from Max Horner back in 62. In Stuttgart. My dad was stationed there and my Ma was German so she was able schmooze with the family. My mom learned more than I did. I play by ear and it actually was a disadvantage. It made me lazy. I could play anything once I heard it. So I dropped out and picked up the guitar a year later. I had to buy it tho. My parents only gave me one chance. So I saved up my grass money and after a couple months I could afford a 15.99 Silvertone. I taught myself. Never had a lesson. Like I say “I got an ear”. It’s been over 50 yrs and I still play. Rickenbacker,Martin, and ovation mandolin. I play harp....but not like u dear lady. But hearing Horner sent me back to nostalgia lane. I guess Max has passed. What about the Golden Melody? It's my primary harp. I have Special 20s and Marine Bands, but for my style of playing I love the equal temperament and pure tone of the Golden Melody. The quality seems more consistent right out of the box, and the rounded body style is a winner too. Back in the 80s and 90s I was head waiter and harmonica and percussion player in the house band of a popular ski town restaurant and bar. One of the guys in the band had toured with Norton Buffalo, so Norton dined and performed there regularly. I'm pretty sure he played Golden Melody's before he switched to Silvertones. Norton wasn't just a great harp player, he was a great performer with a great voice and a sweet guy. I learned a lot from watching him perform. His solo on Bonnie Raitt's "Runaway" still gives me chills every time I hear it. Think I'll play it right now. Nice job. Thanks for the video. I'll check back to see if you have anything to say about the Golden Melody.

This is just what I was looking for. Thanks for doing this and posting it. I'm classically trained on piano and pipe organ. I also play sax, guitar, violin, accordion, but not harmonica. My parents were German. Both played harmonica and we had a drawer full of Hohner harmonicas, but they never interested me. When I was a kid, I blew a few notes and said, okay, that's enough of that, and put it back in the drawer. Hahaha. I envy people who play blues riffs on a instrument they can put in their pocket. So at age 67 I decided, okay, time to learn to play the harp. It's ridiculous that I don't know how to play a harmonica. I have a Hohner Marine Band coming in the mail because I know that's a very popular choice with pros. But, I wanted to know more about the range of instruments and tone versus price. There are $5 instruments and $80 instruments. What's the difference? Your video answers that question.

Les Laxson Marine band's perfectly fine for beginners. If you plan on sticking with it, marine band's probably the best idea, because it will serve your needs as you progress. The special 20 is just the right mix of quality and price, so it's a good idea for beginners who aren't sure if they want to stick with it. While the marine band is nicer, the decision basically comes down to price and what you're willing to spend.

I was surprised that the Marine Band model was near the top. Back in the early 70s when I bought my harmonicas, a Marine Band was less than $3. That's all my father played.

Even the old standby sounds good when Annie Raines plays it!!!

It would be fun to just sit down and jam with you. You're quite good. I play a 4 octave chromatic, and a German Honer from the 40's (mostly) though I'm up to about a dozen different harps by this time. Much easier to pack than a piano, or hammered dulcimer. Something somewhat magical about a few friends around a campfire, just seeing where the music goes. My respects, ma'am.

'Whatever sound I hear, I'm going to play something'. Love that! It is the same with guitars. I can listen to Annie play all day. And talk, too! And prices? They are online. The Hohner Marine Band Deluxe is $65 at big music shops. The cheapest model is $14. So figure ~$10 more, for each model?
