Hokimate Harwood, Te Papa Bicultural Science Researcher, talks about identifying the feathers in more than 100 cloaks in Te Papa's collection. Hokimate explains that 'the placement of feathers is a way of retaining or containing memories and information. So every kind of pattern displayed some kind of information from the weaver.'
Kahu Ora | Living Cloaks showcases the world's largest collection of Māori cloaks -- among the most precious taonga (treasures) to Māori and stunning in their artistry and diversity. At the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, 8 June -- 21 October 2012.
