@@MichaelSmith-pg6gi indeed. I haven’t read the book but I read someone else online who had, and described Chgur lol. And anyway I think that’s part of what Chigurs character detests in these rural, sheltered Americans. A deer will stand still and then jump in a random direction at the last second because that actually has the greatest chance of survival if a predator is trying to catch it. Ofc if this is used to avoid a car then this is less effective, and even less so if the car is moving faster than their natural predators (they may mistime it and not jump at all). Ultimately the deer has better survival instincts than this guy. But it's amazing how compliant people will be in a "mildly" stressful situation of being pulled over by a stranger who is talking like a cop. He's been conditioned to obey orders from a perceived authority figure and 99% of the time that'd work... Unless you have the misfortune of running into Anton Chigurh.

@@DeathnoteBB Movie, or not. You'd be surprised how many people pull off to the side of the road, in order to help someone else in need of assistance. People are mugged, hijacked, abducted & murdered daily by just pulling over. When you get out of your vehicle, you're leaving the safety & security of your vehicle & leaving yourself open & vulnerable. Just because it's a movie, doesn't mean that events such as this, don't, or won't occur. The only difference is the weapon of choice, in which they use to gain control of you, or your vehicle. Instead of a bolt gun, it might be gun, knife, or a finger in the jacket, made to give you the appearance of a gun. Nevertheless, in events such as this. The ending & outcome doesn't end good. That's why it's always best not to pull over & if you do, don't get out of the vehicle, nor allow them in.

This is another reason why Anton is so terrifying in this movie: basically everyone Anton meets has no idea the kind of monster Anton is and what hes capable of. Most of them probably can't even comprehend the evil Anton commits on a daily basis. God knows what he would've done to the motel lady if there wasn't anither witness present he'd have to take care of too. These rural Americans are extremely trusting people, they're the kind of people to hand you back a 5 when their change is a 1, who'd wait around and make sure you got your lost wallet, who'd help someone whos car broke down on the side of the road. They respect authority and trust cops, because the cops are just like them out in the country, they probably know them on a personal basis. Anton is fully willing to exploit this kindness in the worst way possible. Only Moss, Carson and possibly Bell have any chance of surviving because they have dealt with evil, they have seen what horrible things people are capable of.

It’s subtlety showing that the man is too afraid to do anything as to not comply to what Anton wanted. He subconsciously knew that the moment he stepped out of the car that the man was dangerous and that noncompliance would end painfully for him.
@occamrazor5180

@@mavericktorr3324 right on the dime. People saying they would drive away say that just because they saw what happened next. It's a quiet terror and yet disbelief that anything remotely terrifying could happen that drove this unfortunate man to his death. He thought that it must've been something else in question. Once asked to hold still the man was locked in fear and was unable to object because he met the most incredibly evil person. Anton Chigurh is absolutely the most terrifying antagonist I've ever seen in any movie. The role was so brilliantly acted by Havier Bardem that it is basically the only pillar that makes this movie important. The rest is ok, but nothing special. Oh...and Jews went into their "shower bathrooms" compliantly without objection even though they felt the dread...normal people simply cannot shake off this lock. It would take a special person, used in fighting for their lives...usually no one gets passing this point "successfully"
