what’s so incredible about this scene is that Hodor seems like a minor character, someone forgettable, but with this backstory of a “nobody” character proves to not only be integral to the plot, but someone who had a destiny since childhood

Not simply destiny, but Bran saw in the past the "Timewrap" of the 'illness' Hodor suffered as a kid, that would eventually lead to Hodor's death. The timelines were linked, Bran could travel through time.

@@SBezmy It meant that the "timewrap" got interfered, Bran meets the "time period on the occurrence". Bran contacted,by envisioning Hodor, in the past, that event interfered in the "future" timeline where they would meet each other. His entire life from a youth was for one single purpose. To Hold the Door. He was charged with a mission since he was a child because of (1) his heart and (2) his great strength. He spent most of Game of Thrones as an after thought or what people saw as comedic relief/entertainment. But when the truth of his character back story and revelation is revealed WE see he is just as important a character as Jon, Arya, or Bran. He held the Door with all his might, with all his strength and in doing so made the ultimate sacrifice while saving the future of many others through Bran.

It hits you right there. Up until Bran possessed him, he was a normal, happy kid. Bran took all that and condemned Hodor to live with his brain cooked until he died for Bran. I wish this would have been more reflected upon. And I wish they had used Brans time-travelling visions more. Such a unique form of magic, and so tragic. There is a well circulated rewrite where Bran tries to warn King Aerys of the walkers, but it results in Aerys going mad and obsessing over "burning them all". As the three-eyed raven said - the past is written, the ink is dry. You cannot change what has been, only learn from it. More exploration of this power would have been so cool.

And this is where the show falls off; maybe there is good development for Brann to become king, but...this scene is the last steppingstone we really see of the writing. How does Brann come to terms with this and his new powers; We'll never really know cause the show went spark notes mode. I think his compassion and guilt for Willis/Hodor will cement his capacity to be king, he wont use his vision or warging carelessly anymore after this point.

Imagine you are hired to play the part of young Wyllis / Hodor. You will be on screen for only a few minutes total. You are guest starring as maybe the most beloved character in all of Game of Thrones. You will do very little except act out the scene where he loses his mind and sees a vision and experiences his own death in the future, a behavior that basically no actor has ever captured on film before, because it's not a typical plot development. You basically say three distinct words over and over, and have to use your ability to act to convey everything else. Millions upon millions of people will see your performance. This actor came on stage, destroyed your heart and made you cry, and left without elaborating further.

This is the reason Bran truly became detached and unemotional, the guilt he carries for the destroyed life of Hodor, the fear of the sheer devastating power he has over time and over others destroyed him and so to never allow it to happen again he has become what we would call a machine.

I don't usually cry. In fact, over the past five years, I can't remember shedding a single tear. That changed when I first watched that scene. No matter how many times I've tried to watch it again, I can't hold back my tears. Why does it affect me so deeply? Perhaps it's because we knew so little about Hodor's character until that moment, only to be confronted with the tragic origin of his name. Learning that he knew his fate since he was a child, yet still chose to embrace it, is heart-wrenching. It's the realization that he was willing to sacrifice his entire life for this moment, knowing the toll it would take on him, that moves me to my core. It makes me reflect on the nature of destiny and sacrifice. Hodor carried the weight of his future with silent dignity, embodying a level of bravery and selflessness that is profoundly touching. His story challenges us to consider the depth of our own courage and the sacrifices we're willing to make for others. In the end, it's not just the sadness of Hodor's fate that brings us to tears, but the beauty of his unyielding spirit. It reminds us of the unsung heroes in our lives, those who stand in the shadows yet hold us up, often at great personal cost. Hodor's story is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability, the power of silent sacrifice, and the indelible mark it leaves on our hearts.

@@thewind6047 Wrong. The books aren't complete, G R R Martin is still writing them. These events here have yet to be written by the author. In fact he himself said that in his book, when he will reach this moment, this scene is not going to be present. Not as shown here. It's going to be a whole different thing. This scene here is all from the writers of the show. In the book Hodor is also going to hold this door, but it's going to be for different reasons and nature. No time travel, no Hodor = Hold the Door brainwash style. All different. Besides, even tho they take from the books, it's hardly a 1 to 1 transcription. For example, Tyrion is extremely different in the Books. An actual villain, petty, vindictive, and destructive. Tyrion in the show is charming, unsung Hero, with many unspoken morals and gallantry, even good looking. Way different. That's all the show's merit. They still share a ton at the core, but they really differ. Actually pretty interesting. Search ''The real Tyrion Lannister'' here on KZitem, it has almost 3million views. Shows the differences between the two. It's 1h long, but worth it.
