This is awesome. My dad always tells me the story of him jumping in the hole in the road when my mum finished with him. He landed very close to a police man and got locked up at West bar for the night. Mum took him back after feeling sorry for him. They are still together and that must have been 1974.

Thanks. I used this film in class as a teacher to inspire students to enjoy poetry...and film! It was shot locally and was part of a longer documentary. I found it online and edited it down for posterity as the "Hole In The Road" which features in this is now long gone in the centre of Sheffield. Lots of folk round here have fond memories of it and John Cooper-Clarke used the town, the flats and the nearby Sheffield Poly (now Sheffield Hallam Uni) to great effect.

The decline of British Steel brought me here, after my mum and dad who were born in Frecheville / Sheffield brought me onto the planet.

I tried to identify this fascinating 'hole in the road' about 10 years ago when I first watched 'Ten years in an open necked shirt' (which this is an extract from - also available on KZitem). Thanks for finally revealing its location in Sheffield, and answering my 10-year-old question! Do you know any more about it? What the place is called, when it was knocked down?

+Tom Kelly Glad to oblige, Tom. Here's a wiki-link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Square,_Sheffield I came to Sheffield in the late seventies and saw busking bands and fish (in a large aquarium in the walls) down in this famous hole in Castle Square. I also used to drive round it twice a day on way to and from work. It was filled in and levelled in a concerted effort to remove a few "underground" passageways that some members of the public disliked...perhaps at night or on dark evenings...dunno. The Supertram network now slides back and forth at ground level and this is a car restriction zone so much has changed here over the years. I always enjoyed a saunter down there away from the traffic and never had any antisocial bother negotiating the place. When I taught English locally, I used this film a lot in class to inspire some lads who thought poetry was a chore. I make films myself and "grabbed" this for old time's sake. I will reshoot it with the original longer (and I think, more effective) soundtrack if/when I get some time. BTW While you are googling, look up "Urban Splash" as they have transformed some of the brutalist parts featured in this film. Hope this helps.

People said subways not safe at night, escalators turned off at night, now it's gone, streets at ground level are worse, deserted.

Why did they fill it in ?

I guess it became rather rundown...and for some folk a place to avoid after dusk. It became quite seedy to be frank. Other subways (underground walkways) were filled in on Arundel Gate/Furnival Square and another on Charter Row.. The public "voted with their feet" by ignoring them and clambering over fences in the middle of the carriageway rather than disappear out of sight to be a possible target for crime. A further reason here at The Hole In The Road to dispense with this dated feature was the "new" Supertram tracks cover this ground and spanning this chasm would have been tricky and costly. Hope this helps.

@@JackTodhunter it is now seedy above ground, virtually deserted after dark, those were the good old days.
