We accidentally booked an Airbnb in Salerno instead of Sorrento for our Amalfi coast holiday and we were so glad we did it. It’s a lovely town, with excellent transportation possibilities, took a boat to Amalfi coast and visited Paestum.

My dad took part in the building of the Salerno War Cemetery in WWII. He said that he’d never seen so much poverty in Salerno and Naples. I visited Salerno many years ago but sadly never visited the cemetery, so that’s something I ought to do should I venture down south again.

My family and I are planning a trip in the summer, we have 3 days around the Amalfi coast and are looking at either Salerno or Sorento as a base. We planned to do a day trip to Pompéi & Vesuvius, a ferry trip to Positano and one day chilling on a beach! Before going to Rome by train. At the moment Salerno gets my vote from a practically perspective. To anyone who has been to both…any advantage of Sorento over Salerno & vice versa?

No no no. We want to keep Salerno our little secret. It's perfectly unknown to tourist, nary a souvenir shop in sight. We stayed in Oct 2023 thinking Salerno would just be a base to visit all the other compass points. Instead, we fell in love with the city and skipped planned visits to the Amalfi coast and Capri. Wished now we had skipped our week in Rome and stayed longer in Salerno. Like forever.
