I don't know about anyone else, but these stories have inspired me to go as the not-so-good doctor for halloween. I just love them so much. Edit: And also, the return of Dr. Satan's disguise for his disguise! I love how silly it is in concept, that he wears a large hat and cloak over his outfit when he goes out.

Horror Babble got me thru 2 years of nyc driving in an 18 wheeler I listened to all Hp lovecraft and king in yellow and mr James That one about the Scarlet Plague- ya Jack London- that one I never was the same after that Something about the hopelessness of it matched mountain of madness And it matched Mesopotamian history Good luck- some of this stuff can be a dangerous way into a truth so profound that it really is scary

This was good, Ian. Quite good. Another wonderful surprise from Paul Ernst. I don’t know where you keep finding the artwork either, but this and The Man Who Chained the Lightning are as amazing to look at as they are to listen to.

If anyone has seen the French film series Fantomas (for whom the badass Melvins + Mike Patton noise / instrumental band is named) it's clear it borrows heavily from these stories. I speak only about 10 words of French and still enjoyed the first Fantomas movie without subs because, like the Dr. Satan stories, they're so over-the-top nuts and campy that you can follow along even if you can't follow what they're saying.
@blixten2928

Yes, Fantomas is so tongue-in-cheek, cheesy and hilarious all once! Try one with sub-titles, it's worth it! (One can buy the CDs.) Good taste!

There was an Iroquois theater in Chicago that burned in 1903. If the electrician with the premonition was 14 when the Mohawk burned, if it burned in 1903 then he would have been 46 in 1935, when this story was published.

At first, the premise of this set of tales seemed kind of..well, dopey. But I did enjoy them enough to stay tuned. Enjoyed them a whole bunch, in fact, and I realized the author has used a simple though unique device to create the Doctor. Usually we expect a rich kid with a huge estate and inheritance to son, say, a bat costume and AGAINST evil...but rarely do we hear of the progeny from generations of honest toil use the empire handed to him by merit of birth to male the world MORE evil. I guess I always expected my villains to be more entrepreneurial and capitalistic in nature. Now the good Dr. Is one of a myriad of loveable supervillains I keep in my candlelit, Captain Black-scented library of weird tomes.

Okay Doc, I get it, you're all kinds of evil, but can you imagine for a minute how much money you would make if you sold this technology to the medical industry? You could revolutionize x-ray technology. Also, Evil Overlord List 156: If I have the hero and his party trapped, I will not wait until my Superweapon charges to finish them off if more conventional means are available.

Wait, so it's just a skull, so no tissue or flesh on it, so no tongue to talk? No muscles to move the jaw? So it's a skull with muscles attached? And lips? but the eyes work? Oh, wait. The flesh just became invisible. OK, got it.
@bobbymarcum772
2 жыл бұрын
Yes the amount of unrealistic developments was forcing even me to abandon this weird fiction for offending my sense of scientific accuracy--a bare skull on a sentient human!!! But when I found out Dr. Satan had turned the flesh invisible, I was glad I had stayed tuned.
@andersdroid
2 жыл бұрын
Yep, most of these tales require one to abandon disbelief to enjoy the tale lol. It’s usually well worth it I’ve noticed
@susansaoirse2797
2 жыл бұрын
Nope. Invisible tissue and flesh. Not that this is actually scientifically sound, but it's a little more effort than talking fleshless skulls. For 1935 sci fi fantasy it's impressively imaginative and worth tuning into the whole story. If you're looking for realism in way out fiction, check out The Expanse. But don't expect it from this.

@@susansaoirse2797 German scientists, in ww1-ww2 era experimentation, reanimated and maintained the living functions of heads from various creatures successfully (albeit, not indefinitely) including monkeys, Cats, Chickens, cows, and Pigs. They made unnumbered unsuccessful attempts at keeping human heads going, which should at LEAST make even the staunchest materialist atheist ponder the reality of spirit being a vital component of the soul. But in this weered tail, mostly it shows us that that actresses and perhaps actors have no souls.

But my dear brilliant Doctor, if matter is compressed to its ultimate limit, a black hole is created.
