I realize I'm old school but there's something simple, happy, and analog about them. The huge size and imposing front grills of the new ones just put me off. Recently went to my folks' ranch and they have a brand new full size truck and one they've had since the 2000s...I found myself MUCH more tempted to drive the old one.

@@beexiong2995the guys putting down the third gens are knocking them before they even owned one. Mine has 200k on it already its a 16 trd sport with the trd pro fox 2.5 shocks on some 32 inch all terrains and its tuned. i have put this truck thru its paces. From pulling cars home from out of state to offroading it jumping it deep snow driving. The thing has never skipped a beat. All ive done to it is fluid changes tune ups and brakes. The first gens are great trucks dont get me wrong but to say they are better than the third gen or to say the third gens arent as reliable and tough is a joke. If anything the frames are going to last alot longer on theese third gens and thats the main reason alot of the first gens got taken off the road for frame rust. I have been looking to buy a 1st gen again to use up in the mountains and offroading but i am havibg trouble finding any that arent rusted out even ones with the frames replaced are already getting rusty up here in the north east

the simplicity, practicality, and reliability of the first gen is truly unmatched. My dad had a 1st gen sr5 with 4 wheel drive, 4 cylinder. had 750xxx miles, NEVER had an issue. and unfortunately was hit by a high schooler who was texting and driving. Truck was totaled, we still have the truck and we charged the battery to see if it would crank. She fired up on the first start after sitting for 4 years. im currently searching for a shell

The 01 will be gone. Toyota will stop building parts for them so they will not be road worthy and become relics. They will never become collectible cars either where hobbyists will somewhat maintain parts availability. Thats just the nature of things. Even the Toyota Supra, mk3 and mk4, toyota started reproducing parts for them but they are classics now

Ive owned both back to back. Gen 1 is good but it needs TLC to keep it running because of the age. Balljoints are a joke on these. Its like you are driving on borrowed time before it pops. Some people commented about the 1st gen being better or the new trucks are too big. Frankly its all for safety and technology. My wife and I were hit last year by a drunk driver in my '21 Offroad doublecab at over 70 mph and walked out of it unscathed. I can't say the same have I still had my 01' TRD offroad. Technology is getting easier to make and replace today and tomorrow in the future. So what if it has 50 computers onboard. As long as I know my son and wife are safe. The new truck still has a lot of the 1st gen charm. Rides high, stiff, slow, bouncy, low roof, low leg support and lousy mileage.

Sorry to have to state the obvious. With the amount of computerized crap placed in new vehicles, that new Tacoma will be far more challenged to last as long as the 2001 has. And that 2001 still is not done, rust be dammed. New trucks are obese, stupid obese. They are severely over-styled with little function other than bragging "rights" for owners at the urinal stalls. I'd be grateful to have the older Toyota. Ethan wins. 👑
