So it was the late 90's. This is a few years after Kurt Cobain died. Music was in the grips of the Napster revolution; it was the beginning of the end of the music industrial label system, but it hadn't happened yet. This was pre-Columbine, pre-9/11. Rock was really groping around looking for that next big thing. It was the era of Limp Bizkit and Korn (not that there is anything wrong with them); it was the gap between Grunge (if you could call it that) and New Metal. Deftones and Incubus were really big at the time. And then comes this song and this video, and it was unlike anything anyone had seen or heard. And then Spiders came out, and people began to realize that SOAD was a seriously talented band. They'd shed the kind of psycho-circus, punk aesthetic but retain their signature style. SOAD has aged rather well. Hope they come back together to make more music,

System of a Down is a solid kick in the chest. The first two albums are exactly how you described them, outspoken and unapologetic. Their simplicity in style and powerful message cut through all the bullshit of what was popular at the time. I think I saw them around 15 times in the early 2000s. The energy they brought to any venue was so explosive, I'll never forget them!

This was the song that introduced me to them. My local alt rock radio station played this sometimes, and 13 year old me was amazed. I had been learning and performing Carnatic vocal music since the age of 5 and was dipping my feet into heavier music. I was acclimated to screaming by Dragon Ball Z, ya know.... the whole cathartic explosion of power, very suitable for metal lol. So I was in the perfect place for metal to get its talons into me. I already loved Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine, Disturbed, Korn, Deftones, etc. And here was a man who screamed his head off, but also was unafraid of proudly showcasing his culture's musical traditions through vocal ornamentation, which was actually very much in the same quadrant of musical space as the type I practiced. I wanted to be in a metal band someday and if Serj can do it, so could I! SOAD is quite meaningful to me for that reason. Eventually after I entered highschool, I kinda moved on to heavier metal genres and got into death/thrash/black metal, but to this day I'm still grateful that SOAD let a South Asian-American kid dream.

For a change of pace with SOAD, you should check out, "Lonely Day." Daron has the lead vocals with Serj backing him. A rare ballad that amazes listeners to the diversity of SOAD. I can't see the video you are watching too clear but the censorship you might be referring to is a quick clip of a sign saying, "Aspertame Kills."

Sadly this video suffers from what I like to call "MTV first." Basically most videos from about the early 90's into the early 2000's were censored and unless the Band managed to get the rights to the video from the Label before the master was tossed you won't find an uncensored version and any uncensored version you do find of most songs from that era mean someone took the time to line up the original track and dub it over the videos audio. This censoring was done for MTV as the videos were pretty much just supposed to be played there on repeat, the interwebs and the youtubes wasn't even a thought for the most part till near the end and fall of MTV as a source for actual music. (Before it is mentioned, yes there was internet at the time of this video but no KZitem and it was mostly still Dial up unless you lived in a big city with money to burn.)

I remember when I first heard this back in the day, I had the same reaction lol. I knew I had to know more about this band and I've been a fan ever since, even though they actually didn't have a very long run before a lot of inactivity save for occasional concerts. And that opening skit, from a late 90s video is SOOO PERFECT for today, with the attempts by our government to shut down TikTok cause they have become a news outlet and organization tool for causes that they and the corporate media don't like and with Meta itself with zero notice shutting off any political content from peoples feeds on Insta and Facebook, they don't like that so many people are awake to how badly we are screwed on a daily basis and so they are busy doing all they can to distract and outright ban any news or info sources that don't push their specific propaganda.

yeah personally i dont rate soad artistically / creatively as high as some of the older generation metal... being a nu-metal... used to listen to them a lot along with several other similarly grouped bands like the korn, coal chamber, etc. and of course their unique mixture of things together makes the sound unique enough to have its own place being so original. but i'll tell you something else (for free)... that during this same era / timeframe a friend at uni (he was a drummer, and i jammed with him a couple of times)... was telling me about tool (and perfect circle)... also therapy, and this lesser known uk band called 'cold'. and by far i tend to keep on listening for years past their sell by date the therapy and cold stuff. more than some of these more well known nu-metal bands like the soad here (or the slipnot). so the more you can dig... it can pay off in the end. especially when exchanging conversations with friends whom they are listening to slightly different things. also in that respect thanks for last time... with the 30mins of the pink floyd pompeii. because it was awesome! as had never actually gotten that into pink floyd before due to their such lengthy track times. with so much dead space. but now i get it... and its amazing also the shooting of that video was so awesome. really bringing back those lost era. was much appreciated 👍🖤
