I encountered an interesting issue in late June with an automation that relied on SunRise / SunSet information to trigger a timer or schedule. Apparently, this functionality depends upon a working Internet connection. My ISP (Comcast) had an outage that started about 4:20AM and lasted until 2:45PM. As such, the SunRise event didn't start my DayTime schedule at the expected and it did not trigger until the Internet connection was restored. I was unaware of this dependency, but it does make sense in hindsight.
Here's an example of such a service:
sunrise-sunset...
In this video, I'm trying to come up with a "fail safe" backup method for this DayTime schedule. This schedule, along with others like it (sMorning, sAfternoon, etc.) to control various aspects of my home solar power management system. This schedule is used to only run sections of code while the sun is up, as that's when there's the possibility for solar power generation. Likewise, this schedule is used to provide a unique, once per day startup "event" to get the power management system running as soon as excess power is being produced.
The idea is I set up a fail safe schedule that starts after the latest sun rise time and stops after the latest sun set time during the year, for my location. Then, using various combinations or transitions of the actual SunRise/SunSet and Fail Safe schedules, a synthetic DayTime schedule is created. 99.9% of the time, it'll follow the actual sun rise/set times, but in the rare event of an ISP outage, it will have a slightly later start or stop time.
Not sure if this sun rise/set issue is only on the Vera home automation controllers or if it affects other systems. In any event, it's a good thing to check out on your system and if it's vulnerable to an outage, and that affects some critical automation, it's a good idea to come up with some sort of fail safe backup.
In a following video, I'll look at a few other fail safe automations that I have set up on my Vera.
