My father was a graphic designer back in the 60s who also amassed a collection of art for his home. Changing and replacing mats could get quite expensive. His budget tip, when moving artwork in and out of different frames, was to use inexpensive acrylic paints (Michaels/Walmart) to refresh or recolor a mat still in otherwise good condition.

@@StoneCottageHome o Oh Rachel, so many questions. I love what you do, but I'm limited in where I can.hunt for pretty art pieces. So... can you mix oil paintings with prints or watercolors. Can you mix the current style of frames with beautiful gilded ones, or skinny wooden frames? Or is it all according to the eyes of the beholder? That's how I did my bedroom one. Just ones that I loved. I have some dark wood frames mixed in with the gold ones. Should i put gold on all of them or rub and buff on the relief in the corners? Or ??? The ones I have,I love. All of them are matted like you talked about, but the two that I have now that I want to start with are bird prints on canvas with skinny frames that are just brown. I don't love them. I guess you would advise me to wait until I find the vintage ones that I love. What do you call the type of art you purchase? Oh. So much more.... Can't wait for you next vlog! I love everything British.

Really appreciated your tips….some of these I’ve done myself because I’ve changed frames and cut down glass on so many pieces that really improved the art, but you really presented a clear picture of how to VIEW art before buying so it can be enhanced. Since I’m a prim decorator….I am always on the hunt for wonderful antique frames. I have found pieces like antique samplers that were priced way too cheap because of poor framing choice and brought them back to their antique glory with a better antique frame as well as a nice number of prints etc. Mirrors are another thing that the right frame makes such a difference. Plus I’ve used frames without the glass to surround and enhance a 3 dimensional piece on the wall….so much fun when you experiment with wall art. TFS

Love all the tips , as I am an avid art collector at thrift shops and garage sales. One tip about the mats you mentioned. I do save mats... but I also paint mats to match an existing collection or wall. Just use enough paint to cover... do not saturate a mat. And I do allow a few days to let it dry completely before covering it with the glass and frame.

Yes, I’m seeing Old World vibes, but can you do a Part 2 and dig deeper? I see landscapes, portraits, animals, architectural buildings, ships, a windmill, and flowers. What am I NOT seeing. Please help. I’m truly not complaining, but want to understand the eye, while building my own artwork. Thank you Rachel.

Good morning, Miss Terri! Great questions! I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I think you are wondering how to choose a cohesive art style? In my art selection I first began by choosing my favorite inspiration photos and studying what I liked about them, and what common elements they had. This is what I look for when shopping. I also stick to muted colors so that all the pieces (even if the subjects are very different) will go together. Let me know if this answers your question!

@@StoneCottageHome Thank you, Rachel. This is our first home that we’ve decided to style ONLY if an item has the WOW Factor for BOTH of us. It’s been a difficult journey. Our living areas, including the kitchen is one side of our rectangular shaped house. We’ve painted the walls a cream, golden yellow, and burnt orange. Our wall art is mostly themed with trees and leaves. We don’t have gallery walls, but have tried to find giant art pieces for our high sloping ceilings. I’m trying to learn other décor styles and understand what we really embrace. Since our house is decorated with secondhand furniture and decor, patience has tried my desire to just GET IT DONE. BUT that’s not the mantra for thrifty shoppers on a tight budget. I’ve been enjoying your channel. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for all this information, it will certainly be used. I will look at pictures differently and separate the pictures from the frames, so many times I like the picture or the frame but didn't think of finding something better to go with them. I love your gallery wall and other pictures in your home.

Oh I wish our second hand stores had half the choices yours have with the great prices! It just takes longer sometimes. I’ve always been impressed with your art makeovers. It seemed empty with the books gone from the fireplace. I look forward to more makeovers. Blessings to you both.

Good morning! I'm glad you enjoyed today's visit. We are enjoying this first phase of the living room makeover and as budget and time allow we will move onto the next phase. We're currently gathering the pieces and doing research for the mantel. I've found some great options for bookcases on Marketplace! I'm also gathering art for this space (no surprise there!). As you know, the best rooms take time and are built slowly. Thank you for following along, we're excited to have you with us!

@@StoneCottageHome I understand taking the time for the ideas to evolve. The best outcomes take patience. I purchased a river side cottage in mid michigan 22 years ago and it was a complete rehab. It was a seasonal home but since I retired, it's my primary residence and that called for changes. I enjoy your approach to decorating.

Rachel, have you ever taken a really nice print out picture and make it look painted? Maybe with mod-podged faux brush strokes? And what is the best way to display lovely embroidery or cross stitched pieces? With or without glass and matting? I had a vintage oval frame for years that sat idle until I found an amazing cross stitched piece with lovely birds. I just popped it in and trimmed it but that shiny glass has done a disservice to the piece. How difficult/expensive is it to have the frosted kind cut to fit? I have noticed that over the years when you finally find a piece or two that makes her heart sing you start to see the potential of others that you once seemed to miss!😂 Thank you so much for all the helpful ideas!❤️

Good morning! Yes, the Mod Podge trick is on my list to try! For framing handwork, I would skip the glass. The natural fibers need to breathe, and often, the fabric is too bulky to lay nicely. If the piece is worked on finer fabric, a mat can be used to good effect. I have a cross-stitch piece that I wanted to mat so I had it professionally done where they have a fabric stretcher. For the having frosted glass cut in an oval... I've wondered the same thing. I imagine it would be more, but you might just call your glass shop and see if they can do and what they would charge. Yes, sometimes it takes a while to see a piece of art in a different light, but when that happens, it's fun! I'm thrilled you picked up some useful tips and appreciate you dropping by! 🌷

Good evening! Great question! You're off to a good start with different sizes of art - this creates an interesting arrangement vs. having all the pieces the same size & shape. For more ideas on arranging art, have you seen my video on hanging a gallery wall from start to finish?

This was such an informative video! I've been collecting thrift store art and frames for over a year now and I've found so many interesting pieces. One thing I would love to learn more about is what goes on "behind the art", in other words taking pieces apart and putting things back together. I've found that people use many different methods to hold art in place in the frame; nails, metal pieces with a point on the end, metal tabs, staples, etc. Sometimes those metal tabs break when you're trying to take things apart. I hate to admit how many pieces I've taken apart that now have duck tape holding the art in the frame lol! Any help you could give with that would be much appreciated!

Good morning, Miss Diane! I also have used tape as a temporary fix, but once I have the art "remade" to my taste I'll take it to the framer and ask them to put on a proper backing. Hope this helps!
