Thank you for your analysis. Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. This is why these guys are my favorite a cappella group.

Ciao, Ilaria! I just got home from work and watched your reaction and analysis and it was very well done. Personally, I was not a fan of Michael Bolton's singing in general, I found Bolton's voice very raspy, gritty, and flips to easily. Austin's voice is smooth, and he can regulate his transitions between chest, and head voice with ease and throws in grit as flair. The background vocals were like you said, "a warm hug" and Adams drumming was like it always is, a masterful piece of percussion. If I were to choose a version of When a Man Loves a Woman I would choose this one even over Percy Sledge's original 1966 version. Thank you much for the acknowledgement. Ciao Bella

My only thought was, that in relistening to both versions, was that Percy Sledge put everything he had into that song and sang it flawlessly at least in the studio version. Michael Bolton, even in the studio struggled to reach some of the high notes. Austin proved in his version that he could take it to the highest note and do so flawlessly!

I much prefer Austin's voice. It sounds richer/more full to me and he doesn't sound as if he's reaching for those higher notes. Michael's voice is raspy, yes, but to me it sounds like he's straining to hit those notes. It doesn't sound nearly as natural as Austin's. All of the Home Free guys have beautiful diction, no matter what they're singing or what vocal range they're singing it in! No slurring of words or phrases ever. That's one of the first things I noticed about them. 😳❤ I have nerve deafness in my one good ear and often have trouble understanding words in songs by almost everyone else, but never have had a problem with these guys! 😍 🎶👍 You really should react next to their version of "How Great Thou Art"! Oh my Lord, it's like listening to angels sing. Added bonus: you'll get to hear Adam (the beatboxer) sing a couple solo lines as well as the high "ooohs"! He's got a very nice tenor voice.

Home Free NAILED this one!!!! .... and then some! When Bolton came out with his cover around 1990/1991, it was a hit - all over the radio (at least here in the US); overplayed at times. Many knew the song from Sledge's Original from the mid sixties... it played on radio and TV for better than 10yrs, it was that good but completely new to youngsters when Bolton put his version out. I just watched the video of Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves a Woman (Live) to remind me of how it sounded when I was a girl. I don't think Percy sang, I think he mostly yelled the song; nothing "airy" about it. To my admittedly untrained ears, there was very little musicality in his version. Michael Bolton was better, in terms of musicality, to me. However, his voice wasn't as clear as Austin's, and both of the others sounded lower in pitch. The backing by the rest of the Home Free group added a lot of depth; the call and response gave importance and dimension to those verses in which they occurred. The bands backing the other two men didn't add anything except, perhaps, some rhythm. Thank you for a very good reaction. I'm so grateful that you appreciate this group.

Having now listened to Michael Bolton's version and knowing what Sledge's mono single release of the song, I will admit that when doing a comparison, the Bolton version was probably the more apt choice, more apples to apples in my opinion. Cool to point it out but no harm - no foul.

Y'aa know the original was by Percy Sledge, right? kzitem.info/news/bejne/rK2G3pyNjmOcono I think Austin is much closer to being true the the original. Bolton is not even close. i'm not saying Bolton's version is not good. But I prefer Home Free's cover, hands down.

I have always disliked the Bolton version (not the original version by the way), and it was far inferior to Percy Sledge. Austin adds a special ingredient - joy. Bolton always sounded to me as if he was angry at any woman he fell in love with (either that or he had severe indigestion) but Austin sounds ecstatic at the consequences of his feelings, as well he might with his lovely lady. Bolton gives the impression of hating the unfortunate woman - Austin's smile and tone are those of a man who knows that she will never let him down. It's interesting to consider what effect our emotions have on the voice. Of course Austin is a complete professional and even when in the middle of desperate personal unhappiness knew that his first duty was to the audience and his bandmates, but I don't think it's a coincidence that after years of Tim trying to persuade Austin to attempt the song, he finally felt confident to try it when he had found real happiness and security. Excellent analysis as always! though it might have been even more instructive to compare this version with that of the originator of the song, the great Percy Sledge.

Ciao Patima, your comment comes from a deep listening of the song and what you feel when you listen to it. I agree with you with "the feeling" expressed by Austin because I imagine he was singing for her woman (someone in the comment told me that probably she was in the room when he recorded it). So this is true, Austin sings it with sweetness and devotion to his love, you're right! Thank you for your point of view
