Thank you for very good demonstration and direction on replacing a socket. My husband passed away a couple of years ago so at 71 I am having to learn how to do a lot of things on my own. Today I replaced a non-working socket and feel good about my accomplishment.

*WARNING: wiring does matter! smooth = hot = gold BUT ridged/ribbed = neutral = silver.* i appreciate the op, david, for taking the time to make and share this video. however, among the minor mistakes of not using all items mentioned, using items not mentioned, and not reminding people to unplug, the most dangerous mistake is that of not indicating the importance of polarity and which wire goes to which screw post. unlike what was shown, it does actually matter. there is a hot wire and neutral wire. if you carefully drag your thumbnail across the outer edge (away from the center split) of the wires, you'll feel that one has some ridges or ribbing to it. the other wire does not have those ridges. the smooth wire is the hot electrical wire and should connect to the brass or gold screw. the ridged wire is the neutral electrical wire and should connect to the silver screw. *remember*: smooth = hot = gold BUT ridged/ribbed = neutral = silver.

Mine doesn't have screws at all...not gold nor silver. It's just a brown piece with two holes for the wire to go into. Not a cheap lamp either!

Super video! I was able to fix two lamps in 15 minutes for a cost of 4.25/per lamp. I am not a handy person and I am amazed and thrilled that I was able to do this myself. Thank you so much! I especially like the advice about changing to a one-way switch from a three-way switch. I agree that the one-way switches seem hold up better. Thank you again.

This was just the refresher I needed to replace a chain switch to a one way switch that you used. One suggestion: mention the wire cutters in the tools needed. Thanks, Great tutorial!

**IMPORTANT** It does matter which wire goes to which terminal. On the cord, the wire with the ribbed casing is neutral and should be connected to the silver terminal. The other wire is hot and should be connected to the gold terminal. If you swap them the light will still work but this increases the chance of electrocution. If you consider the anatomy of a light bulb you'll notice there are 2 metal contact points. One for neutral (the threading) and one for hot (the tip). If you wire the socket incorrectly you're electrifying the inner threading which can accidentally be touched. Say you're changing a light bulb. It's partially out and you grip the base touching the metal threading of the bulb....BANG you're electrocuted.
@RiverWyvrn
10 жыл бұрын
Not to mention only the hot wire terminal of the socket is switched, the neutral terminal is always connected to the threads. If you wire it backwards, the threads will be at line voltage, even if the lamp is switched off! Unbelievably irresponsible video.

This video is so full of errors it's ridiculous. For safety, the first thing he should've mentioned is disconnecting the lamp from the power. I know it seems obvious, but it should be yelled from the rooftops for beginners. Also, he uses two tools he doesn't mention as needing (clippers and a wire stripper). He also mentions that it's a 3-way socket meant for dimmable bulbs, which is wrong. 3 way bulbs are electrically different from dimmable bulbs. The sockets are wired different. Sure you can plug a 3-way bulb in a dimmer socket and vice versa, but they won't function as expected.

*WARNING:* the ribbed wire is supposed to be connected to the Silver contact, the smooth wire sheath is supposed to go the Gold contact. The lamp will operate if the wires are backwards BUT you create a shock hazard to yourself because the hot side is running in the exposed socket contact. Google it if you need clarification, I'm new to this but I know there is a certain way to wire them *properly*.

When I bought the new socket at Lowe's I was also advised to attached the black wire to the gold screw, and the white to the silver. Of course, once I opened up the socket, both wires were brown.
